April is Salt Lake's Official Craft Beer Month, and we're ready to celebrate.

While some don't know, Salt Lake has a heady history in the hop arts. In the early 1900's, Salt Lake was one of the top beer producers in the West, and the tradition has continued. Thanks to some interesting liquor laws, Utah brewers have learned how to craft low-alcohol flavors to perfection. As Squatter's Brewmaster Jason Stock said: "We couldn't hide behind bruiser beers here, instead we had to focus on flavor."

With 30 breweries in Salt Lake, there's plenty to celebrate this month. Fact is, there are just enough days in the month to hit each one.

We're excited to celebrate Craft Beer Month in Utah. Look forward to more beer stories this month.

Fun Facts:

  • The Utah chapter of the Pink Boots Society brewed its first collaborative beer on International Women's Day. Named "Mash the Patriarchy," it is a black IPA that can now be found on taps around town.
  • Utah Craft Breweries all brew with the environment in mind. Kiitos built its brewery using a High Efficiency Brewing system, allowing it to achieve up to 12 brews in 24 hours with higher extracts and lower water and raw material usage. It allows them to save energy by using 40% less water and 15-20% less grain. Kiitos and Uinta are powered solely by solar and wind energy. Wasatch-Squatters revamped their water usage, using significant less water in their brewery process. "
  • There are currently 23 breweries in the state, with another 6-7 in planning stages. Utah produces over 200,000 barrels each year, making it 27th in production in the nation.
