Visit Salt Lake Bestows Third Annual SALT Awards
Awards Honored Salt Lake County’s Hospitality Workers
Salt Lake City (July 2024) — Hospitality employees provide vital support for Salt Lake County’s visitor economy and Visit Salt Lake recognized the stars of our tourism industry at the third annual SALT Awards held June 25th at the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre. With the theme of “The Greatest Show,” entertainment for the evening included a spectacular performance by the awe-inspiring TRANSCEND, represented by Utah Live Bands.
The awards were the culmination of the successful inaugural Salt Summit, an educational and networking event featuring world-renowned keynote speaker, Will Guidara, who explored how going beyond the conventional bounds of service can transform guest experiences and redefine industry standards
The awards celebrated hospitality workers who exemplify service, accomplishment, leadership, and tenacity (SALT), with categories in the lodging and dining industries as well as an award that encompassed those involved with attractions, venues, caterers, and transportation providers. Each award recipient was recognized with an engraved SALT crystal award and a $2,000 check.
New this year was the 'Facility Operations' award which goes to those who keep our environments safe, clean, and running smoothly. Their hard work ensures our businesses operate without a hitch, providing safe and welcoming spaces for both guests and staff.
“We’re so proud of our hospitality workers in Salt Lake County,” said Kaitlin Eskelson, president & CEO. “Every day they are instrumental in welcoming the world here and making sure everything is perfect for our valued guests. They are also a big part of the success of our $5.41 billion visitor economy which equates to more than $1,800 in tax relief for each household within Salt Lake County.”

Dining – Behind the Scenes Award – Acknowledges culinary wizards and kitchen warriors and the tireless efforts that go into every dish served, ensuring top-quality flavors and presentation that delight our palates. The award went to Jose Moran, Executive Steward at Hyatt Regency Salt Lake City. His colleagues shared: “With more than two decades of experience in hospitality, Jose has consistently exemplified the highest standards of professionalism, dedication, and leadership. His strategic vision and hands on approach sets the stage for unparalleled service and efficiency. He has an exceptional ability to lead by example and develop his team with empathy, integrity and genuine commitment to our success.”
Dining – Front & Center Award – Celebrates those who create memorable dining experiences with their welcoming service. It was awarded to Liza Wong, waitress at Little America. Her nominators had high praise: “Liza has worked for Little America for 30 years as a server. She is impeccably diligent at her job. hard-working and always on time. She is consistent, never complains and simply wants to understand the job so she can do it best. Customers love her, her attitude and her thankfulness to be able to serve them.”
Lodging – Behind the Scenes Award – Goes to the unsung heroes who ensure every aspect of our guests' stay is perfect, yet often remain unseen. Housekeepers, maintenance staff, and all behind-the-scenes personnel, your dedication to cleanliness, comfort, and experience does not go unnoticed. The winner was Terezija Malic, Lead Room Assistant at the Hilton Salt Lake City Center. Her co-workers said of her, “Since joining the Hilton family 18 years ago, she has consistently demonstrated exceptional education, professionalism, and a genuine passion for her work. She plays a pivotal role in welcoming hew hires to the team and fosters a sense of camaraderie and belonging. Guest satisfaction remains a top priority. Her infectious laughter, and her ability to uplift others brings joy and enhances the morale of our whole team.”
Lodging Front & Center” Award – This category recognizes those who welcome guests with a smile, offering unparalleled service from check-in to checkout. Our nominees are the benchmark of visitor impressions, pivotal in creating unforgettable experiences for every guest. It was given to Maria Elena Flores, Breakfast Attendant at the Residence Inn by Marriott, Sandy, Utah. Admiration for her included, “Maria Elena carries the culture of hospitality with her each day. She treats our guests as if they are her close friends and her smile and warm greetings say it all. She is supportive, helpful, and looks for opportunities to serve her fellow teammates. Maria goes the extra mile and truly creates memorable moments for those around her.”
Scenemaker award – Applauds the creatives and organizers who transform ordinary spaces into extraordinary experiences. Event planners, decorators, and audio-visual technicians, your innovative visions and flawless executions make every event spectacular and memorable. The award went to Gracie Hawkins, Event Producer for LUX Events. Gracie’s ’s co-workers shared praise, “Gracie’s unwavering dedication to providing excellent service and awe-inspiring catering services with an eye for detail and true care for our staff. She is always looking for ways to make each event a little more personal and meaningful. She communicates clearly, calmly and is always willing to work alongside staff to pull off the client’s vision. Working in hospitality with her is like a breath of fresh air.”
The Best Boss Award – is dedicated to leaders who inspire, motivate, and care for their teams. This category honors those managers and supervisors whose leadership makes a real difference in their workplace, fostering a supportive, productive, and positive environment. This award gifts $2,000 to a charity of the winner’s choice. The award was given to Jennifer George, General Manager, Residence Inn by Marriott, Sandy. Her colleagues spoke very highly of her. “Jennifer naturally leads with ‘unreasonable hospitality.” She’s been with the Woodbury Corporation since 1997 and arrives to work daily ready to make memorable moments. She truly looks for any opportunity to make guest stays more memorable. Watching her naturally jump at all opportunities to make guests and associates’ experiences more memorable makes the entire team want to do a better job.
The Facility Operations Award is new this year and goes to those who keep our environments safe, clean, and running smoothly. Their hard work ensures our businesses operate without a hitch, providing safe and welcoming spaces for both guests and staff. It was awarded to Dustin Redmond, Locksmith and Building Maintenance Professional at the Calvin L. Rampton Salt Palace Convention Center. His colleagues shared “Dustin truly stands out for his unwavering dedication, exceptional work ethic, and positive attitude. He works countless hours to ensure smooth operations at the Salt Palace. He continually exceeds expectations and showcases his commitment to sustainability. His constant smile and friendly greetings foster a supportive and enjoyable work environment. Whatever the task, he approaches each assignment with commitment and outstanding performance.
The Overall Spirit of Service Award – celebrates the heart and soul of hospitality—individuals who go above and beyond to ensure every guest feels uniquely valued and cared for. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon those who exemplify dedication, empathy, and excellence in service, embodying the spirit of hospitality at its finest. The award was bestowed upon Cherie and Marco Nunez, Volunteers at the Salt Lake City International Airport . They were lauded by their team, “Cherie and Marco are volunteer Ambassadors at the Salt Lake International Airport. She always has a smile and is calm and composed. He has a fantastic sense of humor and uses it to make situations better. From offering translation services, helping lost travelers and easing the burden of traveling mothers in need, there are so many examples of acts of kindness they have performed. Every time they volunteer they make someone’s day better. They are wonderful people and exemplify the type of experience we want passengers and visitors to have while here.”
