Come for the scenery, stay for the scene!

At the first crisp snowfall along the Wasatch Front, when Salt Lake transforms itself into Utah’s urban basecamp for The Greatest Snow on Earth®, skiers and boarders rejoice. While Salt Lake combines the endless urban activities and rich cultural offerings of any big city, it also boasts quick mountain access. From its vibrant downtown, it’s just 35 minutes to Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, and Solitude, each averaging 500” of Utah’s famous powder each winter.

What about the members of the family who want more adventure? Luckily, options abound in Salt Lake’s winter playland. From winter hiking and birding, to snowshoeing to exploring Utah’s winter bike trails, there’s fun here for the whole family.

Led by Alta environmental employees and members from Salt Lake’s Tracy Aviary, Alta’s “Birding on Skis” takes you on a three-hour ski excursion where you can expect to see birds of prey, mischievous crows and other wildlife while enjoying groomers and famous Utah powder.

If sliding down the mountain isn’t your thing, you can always take in the quiet majesty of the Wasatch Mountains on snowshoes. With terrain options for all skill levels, you can choose between views of the city or expansive high alpine peaks.

The foothills of Salt Lake offer hundreds of miles of outdoor adventure. The Bonneville Shoreline Trail provides year-round hiking, trail running and winter mountain biking opportunities.

Once you’ve had your fill of famous Utah powder, be sure to enjoy après ski - Salt Lake style. There are dozens of brewpubs, bars, cafes and James Beard-nominated dining options open to satiate all tastes. Don’t forget to catch a Utah Jazz basketball game, touring Broadway shows at the Eccles Theater or the internationally renowned Utah Symphony.

You can enjoy astounding four-season outdoor adventures here -- all within minutes of your downtown urban basecamp.
