The Red Movement

As the 2012 season kicks off, it's again time to unite Salt Lake City as the U enters its second year in the PAC-12, going head-to-head with some of the greatest Universities and their respective cities in the western United States. Following the U's inaugural PAC-12 year, we are now all red. It's Salt Lake City, Home of the Utes, versus Arizona State and Tempe; USC and UCLA and L.A.; Cal and San Francisco; the University of Washington and Seattle; Arizona and Tempe; and more.

With such a powerful lineup, Utah Athletics, the Downtown Alliance, Mayor's Office, Utah Sports Commission, EDCUtah and Visit Salt Lake are joining forces to build upon the success of last year's program, The Red Movement, created to generate a stronger sense of community pride and a college town feel, all while showcasing Salt Lake City to our guests from the west. The Red Movement is designed to encourage community involvement from local businesses, fans and families in a variety of different events throughout the fall season.

UNight is a 48-hour, pre-game day experience for fans, families and visitors alike to kick off the U's biggest in-state rivalry. The UNight parade and pep rally is taking place at The Gateway on Friday, September 14, the evening before the U takes on the Y. The festivities start at 6:00 pm with a parade down The Gateway mall. The parade ends at the Olympic fountain and is followed with a pep rally to kick off the always popular and hotly contested Utah-BYU game. Show your Utah spirit alongside the Utah Marching Band, Cheer Squad, Dance Team, Swoop and members of various Utah Athletic Teams before Utah takes on BYU on Saturday at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The fan experience includes face tattoos, balloons, posters and much more. UNight activities are free and guaranteed to be fun for the whole family.

As the pep rally concludes, head to your favorite downtown shops, restaurants and entertainment venues to take advantage of UNight specials.
The date of the 2012 UNight parade and pep rally at The Gateway is Friday, September 14, from 6 to 7 p.m

Paint the Town Red | University of Utah Athletics

“We view our athletics department as an extension of the community and this new partnership with the downtown businesses continue to be an exciting one for both of us. College football games provide a unique entertainment opportunity for residents, visitors, University students and faculty, and we think the Red Movement is fun for everyone.”

– Dr. Chris Hill, Director of Athletics, University of Utah

“The Pac-12 designation was important for our entire community, and we are doing everything we can to leverage this exposure to benefit our local economy. As an Olympic city, we came to understand the importance of being welcoming and hospitable, and we are looking forward to rolling out the Utah red carpet to visitors from other cities who attend Utah football games this year.”
– Lane Beattie, President and CEO, Salt Lake Chamber

“Downtown is thrilled to host thousands of sports fans from other Pac-12 teams this season as we work to continue this great community experience. We know the impact will be felt immediately, but just as important is the long-term relationships we hope to make. We want to be known as the friendliest, most welcoming city in the Pac-12 and we’re grateful to all the community partners and downtown businesses who are working to create a great experience for all.”

– Jason Mathis, Executive Director, Downtown Alliance
