Treasures! Start to Finish: Pacific Railroad Act (1862) and the Last Spikes at Promontory (1869)

Sat, May 04
President Abraham Lincoln signed 1862 Pacific Road Act, loaned by NARA (National Archives & Records Administration) in Washington, D.C., which because of its frailty and light sensitivity will be "rested," and not made available for the next ten years.Next you will see three of the four last spikes, the “one and only” Golden Spike, the Nevada Spike and the Arizona Spike. The first two graciously loaned by Stanford University and the last, from the Union Pacific Museum (Council Bluffs, Iowa) and the Museum of the City of New York.Among other transcontinental railroad artifacts, you will also see the ceremonial mallet used by California Governor Leland Stanford, to tap the last spikes in the last railroad tie. This is the first time since 1869 – one hundred and fifty years ago – that these artifacts have been reunited in Utah.Other treasures may also be added to this rare, once in a decade exhibit, which is free to all visitors.
