The Realities of Diversity Speaker Series: Jelani Cobb

Speakers include award-winning author and journalist Jelani Cobb on August 29; social justice comedian and writer Negin Farad on September 12; and NPR host of Latino USA and journalist Maria Hinojosa, October 17. All three events will be held at the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah.Jelani Cobb writes about the enormous complexity of race in America. In 2015, he received the Sidney Hillman Prize for Opinion & Analysis Journalism for his New Yorker columns, in which he combined “the strengths of an on-the-scene reporter, a public intellectual, a teacher, a vivid writer, a subtle moralist, and an accomplished professional historian.”Cobb teaches in the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and is a staff writer at The New Yorker, where he penned a series of articles surrounding recent events centered around race, the police, and injustice. He is also the recipient of the 2017 Walter Bernstein Award from the Writer’s Guild of America for his investigative series Policing the Police, which aired on PBS Frontline in 2016. He is also the author of several books, including the forthcoming “Antidote to Revolution: African American Anticommunism and the Struggle for Civil Rights, 1931.”RadioWest’s Doug Fabrizio will interview each speaker about their work related to race and diversity, followed by a 30 minute audience Q&A. Interviews will air on RadioWest at a later date
