The Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs at Salt Lake Community College presents Shadows, then Light, an activist panel featuring Marco Saavedra and Viridiana Martinez. Both activists infiltrated an ICE detention center to organize incarcerated migrants. This event will be made available online. You can access the book Shadows, then Light here: https://shadowsthenlight.com/ Shadows then Light honors the movement of undocumented youth coming out of the shadows in an effort to not only to claim human dignity, but, also, to shine light back into the shadows, where the majority of community members remain, facing the dehumanizing threat of discrimination, detention and deportation. This event is a part of Welcoming Week 2020, a program by Salt Lake County Mayor's Office for New Americans dedicated to highlighting the contributions of immigrant and refugee communities. This event is made possible with support from The Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs at Salt Lake Community College, The Mayor's Office for New Americans, Utah Division of Museums and Arts, and Utah Humanities.Zoom Conference CallEvent Contact:Willy Palomo, palomo@utahhumanities.org
