In this exhibition, JP Orquiz explores the anxiety that surrounds the immigration process and how it affects the lives of applicants and their families. The work looks at the daunting amount of forms anddocuments that are involved in the process of obtaining legal residence in the U.S. filtered through the lens of Orquiz’s experience. Some of the text on the forms has been altered to convey the artist’s anxieties and fears about the state of immigration and citizenship.“ Citizenship is an odd thing that we’ve made up. With all the rules and bureaucracy that surround it there’s no surprise that some will be left out in the cold .” ~JP OrquizWe chose to mount this exhibition at PLATFORMS because JP has already experienced censorship surrounding this project. We’re fighting back. We feel the subject matter is timely, important, and that exposing it to the widest possible audience will help increase understanding of the issue, and improve chances of a peaceful, equitable resolution.YOU can #ARTicipate:Immigrant's ladderI.L. is a sculpture that is about moving and growing, it’s about how we all got here. All the objects hanging on the ladder are artifacts that represent part of someone's immigration story. They are either something that represents the culture in the country their family came from, something that represents part of their family’s journey, or something that represents what brought their family here. I want to invite you to add to this sculpture and at the same time share a part of your family's story. Think about it and find something that embodies your family’s immigration story. Humanity didn’t start here in Ogden so whether your family came thousands of years ago or this year we all have a story we can share, and I hope you will.O1ARTS gratefully acknowledges support from our donors, Weber County RAMP and the Puffin Foundation West, Ltd. in making this exhibition possible.
