Composers have often turned to masters from the past for ideas. Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony heralded a new movement in the 20th century when composers turned back to the time of Haydn and Mozart for inspiration. The work is formally conceived as a work from that era, but is also quintessentially Prokofiev in melody, harmony and flavor. This program will also feature the world premiere of a new work for soprano and orchestra by Utah composer, John Costa. Talented soprano, Julie Wright-Costa will sing the premiere performance. Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto, one of Beethoven’s undisputed masterworks, will round out the evening with international star and former Gina Bachauer competitor, Jie Yuan at the piano.
