"CITIZEN WONG" - a powerful new play inspired by the life and times of the First Chinese American

Tue, May 07
  • Presented By: Pan Asian Repertory Theatre
  • at: Union Station
At a time when Congress pushed for an “anti-Chinese wall” and barred birthright citizenship, Wong Chin Foo (1847–1898) -- the most vocal and visible Chinese in 19th century America -- defied the social order to fight for the oppressed in the Land of the Free.“Citizen Wong” dramatically captures the essence of the American Gilded Age when robber barons ran the country and Wong, a celebrity U.S. social rights activist, wielded pen and pulpit to end the Chinese Exclusion Act and expose Christian hypocrisy. The staged reading - presented with movement, props, sound and costume elements – reveals whitewashed U.S. history through Wong’s fictional affair with a suffragette whose father runs for president, reflecting the Chinese-European romances that were common at the time. The epic, yet intimate, play distills 15 years of research to introduce an American hero who has been rediscovered as the Asian-American Martin Luther King.TWO MORE FREE SHOWS:May 8 @ 7 pm at Noorda Center for the Performing Arts, Utah Valley University, Orem.
