Kirstin Chávez renowned international mezzo-soprano and Artist in Residence at the University of Utah School of Music is “setting the record straight” with her new thought-provoking one-woman show, CARMEN Inside Out. After a successful tour of the United Kingdom and the US premier with the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra (New Mexico) in 2017, Chávez is honored to collaborate with UU Associate Professor and Pianist, Jeffrey Price, in an intimate portrayal of Bizet’s Carmen with UtahPresents September 2018.Chávez combines spoken monologues, choreographed Flamenco dance, and world-class singing to illuminate the true inner story of the iconic female heroine. The interactive performance closes with a “Conversation Space” that elicits audience reflection and feedback.CARMEN Inside Out is an interactive theatrical and musical experience transforming traditional opera and carving new paths for performing artists. Chavez and her team aim to connect with people around the globe to create meaningful performances that enlighten and provoke audiences to not only listen, but to interact, respond, and change their communities for the better. At every juncture, Chavez also shares how she integrates all facets of performing (preparation, intention, acting, movement, singing, etc.) with students, emerging artists, teachers, and anyone wanting to develop their “total artist” self.
