Ballet West II will perform a mixed bill of time-honored classical routines and bold new works that will showcase the troupes impressive and diverse talents. The repertoire includes:DivertimentoChoreography: Elena KunikovaMusic: Mikhail GlinkaAfter graduating from Vaganova Ballet Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia, Elena Kunikova danced more than 30 principal and soloist roles including Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Giselle, and many others before switching to teaching, coaching, and choreographing. The classical ballet Divertimento takes its name from a musical term that means a work that entertains and amuses. “As with any piece of art, I hope it puts the audience on an emotional journey, with positive emotions,” said Elena.LadenChoreography: Emily AdamsMusic: Franz SchubertFirst performed at the Utah Arts Festival in 2017, Laden is a contemporary work created for six dancers by Ballet West Principal Artist Emily Adams. It is choreographed to Schubert’s Piano Trio no. 2 in E flat major, Op. 100, one of the last compositions the composer produced in his life. Emily says the work is about the epiphany in realizing, “that sometimes we have to let our burdens go so we can grow.” She was inspired by a line in George Bernard Shaw’s 1910 work A Treatise on Parents and Children—Family Affection. “A benefit to the child may be a burden to the parent but people become attached to their burdens sometimes more than the burdens are attached to them; and to ‘suffer little children’ has become an affectionate impulse deep in our nature.”Don Quixote Pas de DeuxChoreography: after Marius PetipaMusic: Ludwig MinkusAlmost 150 years since Don Quixote was adapted for ballet by Marius Petipa, this pas de deux from the final scene is one of the most celebrated works in dance. Both the ballerina and her partner playfully complete with each other in their soaring jumps, bravura pirouettes, and statuesque balances. The audience is set for a visual treat, which is both lovely and technically demanding.Swan Lake Pas de TroisChoreography: after Marius PetipaMusic: Pyotr Ilyich TchaikovskyPerhaps the most iconic and well-known ballet, Swan Lake is a masterpiece of classical dance. Equally iconic is Tchaikovsky’s truly epic and moving score. The pas de trois features gorgeous costumes, emotional theatricality, and some of the most challenging and powerful dance in ballet’s history.UntitledChoreography: Trevor NaumannMusic: Boaz RobertsBallet West Demi Soloist Trevor Naumann’s approach to choreography has been called “cerebral storytelling.” His modern ballet stylings are often cast on dancers using the discordant music of Boaz Roberts as the guiding influence. The DeJoria Center will be a World Premiere for Naumann’s sixth work.
