Wild and Scenic Film Festival

Kick Back with Films that Inspire

Thursday July 21, 2016

The Wild & Scenic Film Festival presents an evenings of environmental and adventure films during the semi-annual Outdoor Retailer show on August 3, 2016 at Brewvies Cinema Pub downtown Salt Lake City at 8pm. This event is free to the public.

This special one-night-only Wild & Scenic event will showcase a selection of four films originally screened at the annual multi-day festival held each January in Nevada City, CA. “Films featured at Wild & Scenic inspire people to take action for our planet,” says Festival Director, Melinda Booth. “In today’s busy world, it is easy to disconnect from our role in the global ecosystem. When we realize that the change we need in this world begins with us, we start making a difference.” The films selected for this event were produced with support from some of the retailers attending Outdoor Retailer who are committed to the environment including Klean Kanteen, CLIF Bar, KEEN Footwear, and Outdoor Research, among others. The film lineup contains four films ranging in length from 6 to 46 minutes and includes Farmers Speak, The World Beneath the Rims, Live Monumental, and Voyagers Without Trace. A short Q&A with filmmakers will occur after each film making this screening extra-special. Our anchor film, Voyagers Without Trace, starts 78 years ago when three young adventurers from France descended the entire length of Utah with kayaks and cameras, making the first kayak descent of Utah’s Green & Colorado Rivers crossing some of the most rugged canyons of Utah. This thrilling tale set against Utah’s wild canyon country is the latest award winning production by NW Documentary and invites viewers on a treasure hunt with the filmmaker Ian McCluskey as he uncovers the personal stories of the kayakers who drifted into obscurity after they returned home to France at the brink of World War II. This film will also screen in Green River, Utah on August 2 and Green River, Wyoming on August 4.

This free Salt Lake City event is made possible by additional support from Klean Kanteen, CLIF Bar, and KEEN Footwear who will have a presence at the event.

ABOUT 2017 WILD & SCENIC FILM FESTIVAL Considered the nation’s premier environmental and adventure film festivals, this festival combines stellar filmmaking, beautiful cinematography and first-rate storytelling to inform, inspire and ignite solutions and possibilities to restore the earth and human communities while creating a positive future for the next generation. Festival-goers can expect to see award winning films about nature, community activism, adventure, conservation, water, energy and climate change, wildlife, environmental justice, agriculture, and indigenous cultures. The Wild & Scenic Film Festival will be hosted in Nevada City and Grass Valley, California from January 12 – January 16, 2017. This program is a benefit for the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL), a watershed advocacy group who founded the Wild & Scenic Film Festival in 2003. The festival’s namesake is in celebration of SYRCL’s landmark victory to designate “Wild & Scenic” status for 39 miles of the South Yuba River in 1999. Wild & Scenic raises funds and awareness for SYRCL’s initiatives to recover California’s wild salmon and to protect and restore the Yuba River Watershed. What began as a grassroots fundraising effort in 2003 has grown to become the largest environmental film festival in the United States. For more information, visit WildandScenicFilmFestival.org.
