Spring Skiing is Here!

Monday March 21, 2011
Spring is officially here, which means some of Utah’s best skiing is just beginning. With over 100 inches of snowfall this month already, March 2011 has been one of the best I can remember. Spring usually brings a lot of snow to Salt Lake’s mountains, plus the days are longer so you have more sunlight to enjoy it. It’s common to ski deep powder in a heavy snowstorm one day and then ski warm, sunny runs the next day. Spring is pretty much the best of both worlds here.

When the weather is warm, it’s a perfect time to carve the big groomed runs at Solitude and Snowbird, which have thousands of feet of vertical enjoyment. With almost 500” of snow this season already and settled snow depths nearing the 150” range, hitting rocks is a rarity and skiing is carefree. If you’re into something a little more wild, Brighton Resort has a full terrain park with 3 jumps, over 25 rails, and a full sized half-pipe. The Brighton Terrain Park crew keeps the park in top shape, keeping things perfectly groomed and changing up obstacles weekly.

Spring is also a great time to go skiing simply because of the positive atmosphere on the mountain. People hang out on patios and grill burgers in the parking lot, soaking up sunshine and breathing fresh mountain air. It’s also a great time to catch local bands playing at Molly Greens Bar at Brighton or the Peruvian Bar at Alta. If you come out to ski one of Ski Salt Lake’s 4 world-class resorts this spring, make sure to bring a smile and plenty of sunscreen.
