Salt Lake City is never one to rest on its laurels when it comes to food and drink, and the last three months have been no exception. If it’s been a while since you’ve checked out the latest and greatest changes to our foodie scene, we’ve got just what you need - a recap of some of the very best new openings in town.
Franklin Ave. Cocktails & Kitchen
This 21+ bar and restaurant is the latest creation from the Bourbon Group—the same name behind the likes of Whiskey Street, White Horse, and Bourbon House. Their fourth outing in downtown SLC is helmed once more by chef Matt Crandall, who picks up the baton where White Horse left off. Imagine the predecessor's American bistro menu accentuated with globetrotting inspiration and you’ll arrive at your destination. A good example is the seemingly innocuous gemelli pasta. This creative plate arrives as a handsome tangle of house made pasta topped with generous chunks of Dungeness crab—before being finished with sharp Meyer lemon, spicy togarashi and mellow miso butter. If you prefer something closer to home, their signature burger using Snake River Farms wagyu is conversation stoppingly good, one of the best in Utah. The historic digs the business calls home on Edison Street are worth the visit alone.
Woodbine Food Hall & Tavern
National trends often take a moment to blossom on the streets of Salt Lake City, but when they do, they often land as more refined and thoughtful concepts. Case in point, this brand-new food hall in the Granary District. The facility replaces the former home of Rico’s Foods and has undergone a dramatic renovation. The massive space is barely recognizable after a multi-year revamp. The newly opened hall features a range of food vendors with more promised over the coming weekend and months. At the time of writing, guests can choose from The Taco Lady (tacos), Deadpan Sandwich (sandwiches), Mozz Pizza (pizza), 3 Cups Coffee (coffee and pastries). Moreover, Woodbine also features a separate 21+ bar area replete with rooftop patio. Grab a plate of tacos from the hall, then enjoy them up front with a cold local craft brew and city views.

Slackwater Pizza
Also now open in the Granary—one of the valley’s most dramatically improving neighborhoods of late—is this third location for the always popular pie ‘n beer outfit hailing from Weber County. Creative pizzas are the central pillar of the menu, with a bevy of craft brews also ably supporting. Pies include the usual suspects you know and love, but also giddily explore a range of ports; Greece, Indian, Hawaii—all feature on a lineup that isn’t afraid to have some experiment.

The Pearl Bar & Kitchen
One of the most interesting new projects to open in the Beehive over the last few months is this Central 9th spot. The Pearl feels immediately at home in the buzzy neighborhood and joins the likes of Scion, Water Witch, Nohm, and more. The focus of the Pearl is Vietnamese street food dishes from the heart; chef Tommy Nguyen (Takashi, Rye, Post Office Place) cooks the food of his youth, recipes direct from mom—and the results ooze with TLC. The menu is compact and evolves regularly, but if it’s available don’t miss Nguyens’ lusciously rendered pork belly served with velvety egg. The Pearl is the second venture from the crew behind SLC’s Alibi bar—as guarantee as any that the cocktails are on pitch perfect point.

Dough Miner
Are you ready for pasties? No, not that kind. At the Dough Miner, British Cornish pasties are the order of the day. These handheld savory treats began life way back—serving as Cornish silver miners’ best friends. They are part pastry packaging and part delicious filling. Over the years, adventurous souls decided to eat the whole thing and the modern-day pasty was born. The Dough Miner offers a quartet of these savory specialties—everything from a traditional beef and potato through modern riffs like their breakfast pasty and Utahn inflected funeral potato pasty. Need some treats for the road? The ‘Miner also offers excellent house-made donuts in a range of flavors, as well as specialty roasted coffee from Utah coffee experts Rimini.

Angry Korean
Cottonwood Heights is now home to the second location of Angry Korean, one of the most enjoyable Korean menus in town. Members of the team behind the business have previously worked with some of the best in the business, from Michelin starred joints through studying under David Chang, king of umami. Angry Korean is a merry mash up of American and Korean cuisine—their Korean Cheesesteak loads up bulgogi beef with American cheese on a hulking hoagie.

Beehive Distilling
Not a new business per se, but one now sporting a noteworthy new menu, very much worth your time and money. The completely new food offering is the work of chef Bictor Tirado who taps childhood memories to bring an affordable menu that mixes South American and Asian flavor. Al pastor sliders with devilishly good marinated pork are the star for sure, but also consider pairing them with the Korean inspired cucumber side dish for a knife-sharp contrast. It goes without saying as a distiller or excellent merit, the cocktails at Beehive are first rate too.

Snowmobile Pizza
The work of the Vegas-borne Nice Hospitality (also present in Utah with HallPass and the impending Italian Graffiti) is this Central 9th newcomer. Chef Marc Marrone spent more than a decade with the ultra-hip TAO nightlife brand, and expectedly brings a blast of pizazz with this arrival. Here at Snowmobile that means a rad retro theme replete with bold brushes of neon green and pink. The ski motif also riffs on the local topography too, seating for guests comes in the form of former ski lift chairs. The whimsy ends there mind you, the food is serious business: pies, wings, and sandwiches that aim to deliver a slice of East coast flavor.

Mochinut
Love mochi? Love donuts? What about both blended together? Welcome to your nirvana at Mochinut where the dense Japanese treats are stuffed into sweet and curvy donuts. The result is a textural treat, and one available in a range of flavors that are always changing. Grab a classic strawberry or maybe, check out a seasonal flair—ube potato mocihinut anyone? If you’re in the mood for a savory sweet, the Sugar House location of Mochinut (the first in Utah for the national brand) also offers several Korean dogs.

Mama Coco Kitchen
Soul food comes to South Salt Lake with this one. The menu is a taut affair, largely focusing on a variety of po’ boy sandwiches and associated sides. The menu affords a trio of proteins: chicken, fish, and shrimp, and for the indecisive type there’s a loaded version that piles on all three.
