Pioneer Day Celebrations 2011

Wednesday July 20, 2011

July is a month-long  celebration in Utah. While the rest of the country celebrates the 4th of July, and then moves on with their summer, Utah stays in celebration mode to get ready for the 24th of July.

July 24, 1847 is when Brigham Young and a group of pioneers reached the Salt Lake Valley. Many people mistake this holiday for the day Utah received statehood, but that is not correct. Utah received its statehood on January 4, 1896. Utah celebrates this grand event similar to 4th of July celebrations with parades, fireworks, and picnics. View Utah's new fireworks laws here.

Below are some events and celebrations happening in Salt Lake this month to celebrate the pioneers arriving in the valley.

Salt Lake Bees baseball games - What better way to celebrate a hot summer holiday than with a Salt Lake Bees baseball game and fireworks?!

Days of 47 events (all month long in July) - The Days of 47 celebrations have turned into a tradition in the Salt Lake Valley. With many events going on, there is something for everybody!

Days of 47 Rodeo July 18-25 - Celebrate a favorite pastime with a rodeo!

Float Preview Party July 20th and 21st - This is my kids' absolute FAVORITE Pioneer Day tradition! They love being able to see the floats up close, vote for their favorite, then watch for them during the parade or on TV!

Pioneer Day Commemoration Concert July 22nd - Celebrate the pioneers with music.

First Encampment Hike July 23rd - Get to know a little bit of what the pioneers went through by participating in the First Encampment Hike.

Brother Brigham's Ball July 23rd - Celebrate like the pioneers with dancing and fun at This Is The Place Heritage Park.

Free admission to Red Butte Garden - July 24th - One of our favorite places to take a stroll, cool off in the Children's Garden, or enjoy a picnic lunch after taking a short hike, all at Red Butte Garden.

This Is The Place Pioneer Days - July 23rd and 25th - This Is The Place is the perfect place to learn about the pioneers' journey to the valley, and what life was like in Salt Lake City in the early days.

Days of 47 Parade July 25th - After attending the Float Preview Party and voting for your favorite float, watch the parade from downtown Salt Lake City or on TV to see if your favorite float was everybody else's favorite!

Deseret News Marathon July 25th - Participate in the Deseret News Marathon, a Salt Lake City Pioneer Day tradition.

Sunrise Service July 25th - Worship like the pioneers must have when they arrived in the valley after a long trek across the United States.
