Lunch Spot: Nauvoo Cafe

nauvoo_cafe_color-logoFinding myself walking around downtown Salt Lake taking care of some errands, my stomach reminded me that I needed to get lunch even though it was well past noon.  I passed by the corner of South Temple and Main Street and the Nauvoo Cafe caught my eye so I headed in to check it out.

If you've never been inside the Joseph Smith Memorial Building you're in for a treat of ornate architecture and decor dating back to the early 1900's when the building was the Hotel Utah.  Renovated in the early 1990's, it reopened in 1993 and is now home to church offices, a theatre, two very nice restaurants: The Roof and The Garden,  as well as the Nauvoo Cafe.

When first walking in the cafe it almost feels a little too ornate, but it's very comfortable and lends itself to a nice atmosphere.  Although just steps from the center of Salt Lake the quite atmosphere is a good escape.  However, if you care to dine outside they have a fantastic patio that's almost entirely shaded by trees and surrounded by flowers and ferns.

The Food

The Nauvoo Cafe is known for it's hot carved sandwiches with oven roasted turkey, premium cured ham, roast beef and pork but it was "The Best chicken salad sandwich around" that I chose and was very happy about my decision. Prepared on a wheat bun with a hint of cranberry sauce the chicken salad sandwich was a delight. I'd definately go back for more. I added the Chipotle Mayo for a little kick.

I was all over the Tomato Asiago soup but at the last moment decided on the Southwestern Spicy Corn Chowder and was well rewarded. It was spicy alright, I think I broke a sweat.  I know, lightweight.

For under $10 is was a filling and enjoyable lunch. The wheat bread on the sandwich alone is worth coming back and although the chicken salad was a little moist for my taste it is certainly a contender for "The Best around" title.

It's easy to miss the Nauvoo as you're walking by as I certainly have done a number of times but put this spot on your radar for lunch and even breakfast which they serve hot from 7am-10am.

Must Try Next Time

Although I really enjoyed the Southwestern Spicy Corn Chowder I am sure to go back for the Tomato Asiago soup which I was told is their signature soup.  I'll save that for a snowy winter day.

Muffin tops?  Yes they have them and although I couldn't resist a couple of Seinfeld jokes about muffin stumps I resisted and passed this time.

Open M-F 7am-8pm, Sat 9am-8pm, closed Sunday
