Epic Puts a Casual Twist on Fine Dining
I returned to Salt Lake City after Thanksgiving break and noticed my Groupon to Epic was about to expire. Perfect excuse for a date night. Despite my reservations about Epic's southbound location, my boyfriend and I made the trip down to Midvale, and we were pleasantly surprised.
Epic is in essence, exactly what the name suggests: epic food without the pretentiousness that can accompany a "fine dining" experience. Epic is laid back, bright (without being offensive), welcoming, and even plays fun background music. It was also pretty busy for a Tuesday night at 8:30 PM, so obviously other diners have discovered this hidden gem.
We ordered the Risotto with spinach, smokey bacon, portobello mushrooms, and Kobe skirt steak, along with Beef Tenderloin with bleu cheese butter and shallot mashers. The beef in both dishes was prepared exceptionally. Our food was plated quickly, and the service was friendly, although a bit on the slow side.
Bottom line: Epic features a delicious, high caliber menu (note: entrees range from $14-$28), in an unassuming environment. Seems like a great space for larger groups as well, but I would recommend making a reservation ahead of time. My only regret is not ordering the beef tenderloin for myself...
