Salt Lake City is never one to rest on its laurels when it comes to food and drink, and the last three months have been no exception. If it’s been a while since you’ve checked out the latest and greatest changes to our foodie scene, we’ve got just what you need - a recap of some of the very best new openings in town.
Cafe Anh Hong
In-the-know locals, well, they know. They know that Cafe Anh Hong is one of the best spots in town for dim sum. After a recent hiatus from our dining scene the restaurant is now back in action, setting up shop once more in new digs over in Sandy. The suburban spot brings back all of the beloved dishes - rice rolls through sui mai – bite-sized dishes that are fried, steamed, and baked. Grab your like-minded foodie friends and take a trip ASAP, this is the type of cuisine best savored when shared.

Fenice
If the names of Fenice’s owners sound familiar, there’s good reason. Lisa and Jeff Ward are the team behind Summit County’s popular Silver Star Cafe - featured on Guy Fieri’s popular Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. Fenice sees the couple travel down the mountain and bring their culinary expertise to downtown Salt Lake City. Fenice offers an elegant space, with a modern Mediterranean menu, and it’s located in the heart of the city. Intelligent pizza and pasta dishes form the core of the menu that’s supported by the open kitchen’s wood fired oven. Platters of appetizing fritto misto, duck confit carbonara, artisan salumi pizza - it’s warm, welcoming cuisine that you’ll want to raise a glass too. Speaking of which, this is an adult geared eatery, 21+ only.

Kabob Bros
Head down to Midvale and you’ll be rewarded by this smart mix of modern and traditional Pakistani cooking. Kabob’za and loaded fries lead the fusion charge, the former of which sees tandoor roasted meats top thin flatbreads loaded with mozzarella, feta, and veggies. Meanwhile on the more traditional side of the of the menu, we’d be remiss not to call out the lamb nihari; an authentic Pakistani dish that features ridiculously tender braised lamb shank in a richly rewarding gravy.

Cajun Boil
Laissez bon temps rouler - because Utah has a brand-new Cajun seafood spot. Cajun Boil, just on the edge of downtown offers that most dexterous of dishes - the seafood boil. Diners can choose from a range of shellfish such as lobster, crab, clams, mussels, and much more before selecting a spice level and seasoning; spicy crawfish seasoned with garlic butter and studded with corn? You got it! Roll up your sleeves and dig in, hands first.

Brick & Mortar
This newly opened spot re-imagines the now departed Campos Coffee over on Edison Street. It’s a chicly modern space that now lives life as this upscale bar. The 21+ only bar offers an eclectic menu built around elevated pub fare. Amongst the more familiar dishes like burgers and tacos you’ll find internationally inflected fun; al pastor skewers are served with house tortilla; wings are given a foodie makeover using duck confit. Weekend brunch is equally imaginative, and those wanting to really make a splash - check out the Boss Brunch that comes with a 30oz tomahawk steak and bottom of Dom - served for a party of three to share!

Yumz
One lesser-known secret about SLC? The capital of the Beehive state is home to an abundance of vegan cuisine, both sweet and savory. Case in point, the recently opened Yumz, a vegan bakery that serves both sweet and savory dishes, with authentic Latin fusion food the driving flavor behind the dishes. Tamales, pozole, burritos, chile verde, tacos - everything gets the plant-based love here. Even the currently trendy birria is given the meat-free treatment with an IG-worthy quesabirrira quesadillas tapatio ramen featuring on the menu.

Afghan Kitchen
For Afghanistan cuisine in Salt Lake City, you needn't look further than Wali Arshad Salem’s ode to his home city of Kabul. On settling in Utah Salem noted the lack of Afghani options in Utah, and after obtaining the help of another Afhani transplant, chef Naeem Amel, the rest as they say is history. Recently the business expanded with a second location on Salt Lake’s State Street; meaning between the brace of locations, you can now sample Amel’s award-winning dishes seven days a week.

Bambara
One of Utah’s best fine dining spots recently crowned a new executive chef, and he just happens to be one of my personal favorites. The elegant ground floor kitchen over in the hotel Monaco is now headed up by Jerry Pacheco - and his eclectic influence is now starting to make a notable mark on the menu. You’ll find hearty elk and pheasant dishes alongside lighter globe-trotting fare like seared scallops served with shoyu pasta, dashi, and cured egg; there’s even a nod to Michelin-alum Michel Bras right now, with Pacheco’s take on Bras’ famous Gargouillou.

Facil Taqueria
This former food truck recently cemented their popular menu, quite literally, with a new brick and mortar location in Holladay. The kitchen puts out a range of dishes, wryly demarcated by tacos, and not tacos. Amidst those you will find creative proteins like smoked brisket, Nashville hot chicken and confit pork. Prices start from four bucks so you can sample your way through the menu with ease.

Myungrang Hotdogs
The hottest food trends out there right now? Along with fried chicken and boba shops - Korean-styled hot dogs are making waves. These delicious treats are popping up all over the country, not least around a variety of Utah restaurants. One of the latest to spring up locally is this mini chain out of California. Located in South Jordan, Myungrang offers a menu of visually arresting hot dogs and corn dogs topped with everything from mozzarella, through crusted potato chunks, and squid-ink infused finishes. If you can’t settle on just one, don’t worry, Myungrang have you covered with a five-dog sampler box.

Batista
Lastly, but by no means leastly, a brand-new spot that just hit my desk at the time of going to press; proof positive that the SLC dining scene gets ever more delicious each and every month. This new spot in South Salt Lake promises to bring a taste of Miami flavor to Salt Lake City streets - serving up Cuban and Nicaraguan dishes such as bisteck encebollado, sopa de pollo, pan con lechon and much more. The word on the street from chefs in the know, they tell me this is the real deal and not to be missed.
