Christmas in Downtown Salt Lake City

Monday December 12, 2011

Temple Square

Christmas in Salt Lake City is a magical time, and spending the holidays downtown is even more magical. There are so many things to see and do, you will want to plan on multiple days to see them all!

Lights on Temple Square
Definitely the top tourist attraction in Salt Lake City this time of year is on Temple Square. Beginning in mid-August, the lights are carefully strung along trees, walkways and paths, with careful attention to detail as to not damage any part of the trees or plants. Stroll around Temple Square, and warm up in one of the many historic buildings on the grounds.

Carriage Rides
Perhaps the most magical way to see and experience the downtown holiday lights are aboard a horse-drawn carriage ride. Climb aboard the carriages outside the South gates of Temple Square, just along South Temple.

Downtown Holiday Windows
An old tradition dating back to the early days of Salt Lake City, the Downtown Holiday Windows displays will bring magic and excitement to every family member. Download a map of each participating business, and make sure to see them all. Go online afterward and vote for your favorite.

Grand America
The Grand America Hotel is known for its elaborate window displays and holiday events. Enjoy Breakfast with Santa, Afternoon Tea with Santa, a Christmas Eve dinner buffet, and Christmas Day breakfast and brunch. Peer through each magical window display and look for the Christmas Star in each one. Enjoy a small prize at the end when completing the task. Kids will enjoy having their picture taken with Santa, and will learn the importance of giving with the Angel Tree.

Ice Skating at The Gallivan Center
Bundle up and enjoy an outdoor ice skating rink at The Gallivan Center. Located at 36 East 300 South, The Gallivan Center Ice Rink is located close to a trax station, so getting there is easy.

Christmas Concerts
On most nights, there is a free or low-cost Christmas concert happening. Listen to the world famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir, or head over to the historic Cathedral of the Madeleine for the Madeleine Choir School performances. Other popular performances include Bells on Temple Square and Savior of the World. Nothing says holidays like an inspiring Christmas concert.

Holiday Tours of The Governor's Mansion
The Governor and First Lady invite the public into their home for a free holiday tour of their festively decorated home, located at 605 E. South Temple. This historic home is known as the Kearns Mansion and was built in the early days of Salt Lake City by Thomas Kearns.
