The Salt Lake Scene

Belgium on Broadway

brugeedit-1-of-1-2Want an authentic Belgian waffle and a quick cup of coffee?  How about some Flemish stew to warm you up on a chilly fall afternoon?  Tucked into the market building across from Pioneer Park is a shop that serves all this up: Bruge Waffles and Frites.

Run by Bruge native Pierre VanDamme, Bruge is a Salt Lake treat that originally began as a booth at the Farmers Market. Bruge offers two types of Belgian waffles (Brussels and Liege - the former crispy, the latter a little heavier/cakey-er), frites (fries), Belgian-style, with all kinds of sauces, and stew made from an old family recipe.

As I sat at the counter (inside seating is limited, but there are tables and chairs outside), numerous customers came in to order lunch to go. I got the coffee-and-waffle special, and will definitely be headed back to try the rest of the menu soon - save your appetite; the waffles are filling! Its location at the corner of 300 S and 300 W puts it in an up-and-coming part of SLC, alongside Pioneer Park (home of the Farmers Market), Bingham Cyclery, and Tony Caputo's.
