SALT LAKE CITY, April 17, 2014 – Starting this May, The Leonardo museum for science and culture in downtown Salt Lake City, will present a “double header” showing of two all-new exhibitions produced by the creators of the world-renowned BODY WORLDS anatomical exhibits.
BODY WORLDS’ ANIMAL INSIDE OUT will open on Saturday, May 10. This unique exhibit takes visitors on an “anatomical safari” as they experience animals from a rarely seen perspective, exploring their skeletons, muscles, organs, circulatory systems, and more. ANIMAL INSIDE OUT brings together approximately 100 plastinate and capillary animal specimens, displaying the intricate biology and physiology of some of the world’s most spectacular creatures.
ANIMAL INSIDE OUT debuted in Europe, touring museums in Austria, Germany and the U.K., before coming to the United States. The Leonardo is just the third U.S. venue to host this groundbreaking exhibition.
“The authenticity of all BODY WORLDS exhibits gives them the unparalleled ability to both teach, and inspire the deepest respect for all living creatures,” said The Leonardo’s Executive Director Alexandra Hesse. “No museum has ever had the chance to bring two, back-to-back BODY WORLDS exhibitions into a single market. We’re thrilled to be able to offer the people of Utah and the region this first-of-a-kind opportunity. “
The Leonardo is partnering with local animal welfare groups, the Salt Lake City Library, University of Utah’s College of Science, HawkWatch, and others to provide pet adoptions, films, storytelling events and hands-on workshops for families all summer long. Details will be available at www.theleonardo.org.
Immediately following the run of ANIMAL INSIDE OUT, BODY WORLDS & The Cycle of Life will open at The Leonardo. This exhibition is the latest production by physician and pioneering anatomist Dr. Gunther von Hagens. The Cycle of Life allows visitors to see the body throughout the human life cycle and across the arc or aging. Both BODY WORLDS exhibitions feature plastinates—real human and animal specimens preserved through Dr. von Hagens’ invention, the remarkable process of Plastination.
