By Slack Blackman, Parachute — Utah is known for its mountain biking. However, most of the more well-known spots in the state are located down south in Moab. But what if you're located in Salt Lake City and just want to get out for a day's ride on a great singletrack? Luckily, there are plenty of local rides that fit the bill.

Wasatch Crest Trail
Also known as the GWT, the Wasatch Crest Trail is probably the most famous singletrack trail in Salt Lake City. The ride has is all: awesome views, great climbs, and miles of flowy downhill sections. The best way to ride the trail is to actually take a shuttle up from Millcreek Canyon for around $10 and then ride down across the crest and down. What's great about the ride is that you can make it as easy or hard as you want so it's great for all riders, but especially good for intermediate and advanced riders.

This 7-mile section of singletrack trail is actually part of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail on the hills above the University of Utah. This section of the trail is great for advanced and intermediate riders who want to test their downhill skills. New riders should probably get some more riding under their belt on calmer trails before trying this one. If you want to test your mettle, though, this is a good trail to try.

Mueller Park
Just north of Salt Lake City in Bountiful you'll find a great 13-mile singletrack that is especially geared towards intermediate riders. It's best to do the out-and-back on a day when most riders are in school or at work, as the trail can get pretty crowded, especially on the weekends. The downhill is nice and flowy with wide switchbacks, which makes it fun for the way down. If you go during September, you'll be in for a special treat with the color change of the trees.

Millcreek Pipeline
As you can tell, Millcreek Canyon is a popular spot for mountain bikers. One of the most popular spots in the canyon to ride is Millcreek Pipeline. You can ride through the entrance gate and then hit the trail by following the signs on your left as you ride up the canyon. Ride the trail back out to the lookout point and then take the Rattlesnake downhill section for a fast singletrack experience that even beginners will appreciate.

Bonneville Shoreline Trail
The Bonneville Shoreline Trail is the most accessible singletrack trail for anyone living on the East Bench of Salt Lake City. It's a perfect place for beginners to get a few rides under their belt without having to worry about tricky downhills or killer climbs. It starts right near the Hogle Zoo and there are a lot of different trails that branch off the main trail, so take your time and explore.
