A handful of new transportation options make it easier to get around the Utah capital without a car. This spring Salt Lake City opened the TRAX Green Line, a light rail route linking the airport and downtown. The six-mile ride costs $2.50 one way and, with the exception of overnight hours, runs every 15 minutes on weekdays and 20 minutes on weekends.

Once in town, visitors can cycle sight-to-sight aboard a GREENbike, a new bike-share program that features 10 stations scattered across the downtown area. A $5 pass offers unlimited rides of 30 minutes or less  for a 24-hour period, with late penalties ranging from $2 to $5.

Coming in December, yet another mode of public transit will make getting around Salt Lake City even greener: a new streetcar line.
