Freeman of Ween

Listening to Marvelous Clouds, Aaron Freeman's 2012 debut under his own name, fans might have felt that he was ignoring an elephant in his room—a drug-and-alcohol-related onstage flame-out that made viral headlines the year before. But Clouds, a deceptively chill Rod McKuen covers record, was just a warm-up for the artist once known as Gene Ween. In the opening minutes of Freeman, the self-titled debut from his new band, Freeman addresses addiction and its aftermath with the combination of merciless self-inventory and artful songcraft that earned Ween one of the most devoted fan bases in contemporary pop.

This "High-Octane Hootenanny" will certainly delight those interested in a foot-stompin good time. Poor Man's Whiskey has evolved into a ragged, spontaneous beast pulling from equally deep wells of story-telling originals, expertly crafted covers and zany on-stage shenanigans.

Happy

Happiness. Is it an authentic state of contentment, fulfillment, grace – or merely delusion, self-deception and denial? Wasatch Theatre Company tackles that question in the Utah premiere of playwright Robert Caisley’s Happy. Alfred is happy about his life. He’s happy with his job. He’s happy with his marriage. He’s even happily raising his special needs daughter. However, when his best friend invites him to meet the latest woman in his life, things spin out of control. Join Wasatch and explore the nature of happiness. The show is directed by Jim Martin and features Brian Pilling (Alfred), Alyssa Franks (Eva), George Plautz (Eduardo), and Michelle Lynn Hall (Melinda). Happy opens Thursday, November 6th and runs Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center (138 West 300 South). There are also 2:00 p.m. Saturday matinees on November 15th and 22nd. Tickets are $15.00 and can be purchased at www.arttix.org or by calling 1-801-355-2787. “90 wild and intriguing minutes. Caisley’s script is funny, deliberately unnerving, full of smart dialogue and stinging rejoinders.” – The Miami Herald
