roadisland-1-of-1I’ve driven by it for months now, I’ve even taken pictures of it before, but when I finally stepped into the Road Island Diner (on Rt 32 in Oakley), I was unprepared.  This place was the real deal.

img_0634Set in the the repurposed old Rio Grande Train Station, the Rio Grande Cafe serves up some mean carnitas and a whole lot of other good foods.  It’s sometimes overlooked with so many mexican food restaurants popping up around town, but the Rio Grande has the type of good solid menu that can keep you busy visit after visit.  I could write all day about how great their rellenos, chimichangas, continue reading…

libraryThe Salt Lake City Main public library is an amazing architectural masterpiece.  It is very hard to pass by it without noticing its curved architectural lines with a certain harmony of concrete and spandrel glass.  But, the very best part of of the SLC Main is the world that has been created for children inside the library.   If you have never visited the children’s section of the library, you have missed out on giraffes, trolls, dragonflies, ice caves, continue reading…

img_0557Located at Second and Second in the heart of downtown SLC is a bike shop with a lot of character, genuine service, and some serious road experience.  It’s not uncommon to find Brent Hulme, the owner of SLC Bike, in the massive showroom helping customers find just the right rig or accessory for their biking needs.  From roadies to serious huck and rollers this shop is well equipped to handle about anything you can dish out.

My favorite part of SLC Bike is the building where continue reading…

Banners were flown downtown and throughout the convention center as nearly 10,000 people arrived from all over the globe, including one special guest. continue reading…

nauvoo_cafe_color-logoFinding myself walking around downtown Salt Lake taking care of some errands, my stomach reminded me that I needed to get lunch even though it was well past noon.  I passed by the corner of South Temple and Main Street and the Nauvoo Cafe caught my eye so I headed in to check it out.

If you’ve never been inside the Joseph Smith Memorial Building you’re in for a treat of ornate architecture and decor dating back to the early 1900’s when the building was the Hotel Utah.  Renovated in the early 1990’s, it reopened in 1993 and is now home to church offices, a theatre, two very nice restaurants: The Roof and The Garden,  as well as the Nauvoo Cafe. continue reading…

Family History LibrarySalt Lake City is known for many things from the Jazz to the world class skiing just minutes from downtown. Known also as the headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) it’s become the epicenter for genealogy and finding out who your ancestors are and what your family tree might look like.

Whether or not you’re part of the Mormon faith, if you find yourself in Salt Lake City and you have any interest at all in finding your family roots, there are two spots you can check out. Both are free and simple to get started. continue reading…

downtown-rising-corner-buildingIf you’ve not been paying much attention to the downtown skyline, things have been changing at a steady pace.

Since the Downtown Rising development and City Creek Center (City Creek is part of the entire Downtown Rising project) is right across the street from us here at the Salt Lake Convention Center, we tend to notice the view from our windows changing each day. What I thought would be smaller buildings have turned out to be quite tall.

With respect to that I did a little digging around in the photo files from earlier this year and came up with these photos taken on the corner of West Temple and South Temple looking south east.  continue reading…
