livingtraditions09-1-of-7One reason I’m happy to be in SLC: in the space of two weekends and as many city blocks, I was able to a) catch a hip hop band out of Portland, b) view a Sundance film, c) watch dance performances from various countries in Latin America and Central Africa, and d) talk with heirloom tomato and recycled glass jewelry experts. Oh, and all of this was free. continue reading…

The Downtown Salt Lake’s Farmers Market is one of my absolute favorite summertime activities.  Offering a wide variety of locally grown or prepared fresh produce, meat, breads and pastries,  artisan cheeses, and other prepared food and drink options. Held in Pioneer Park, vendors also sell indoor and garden plants, and handmade arts and crafts.

The Farmers Market is a delicious way to sample Salt Lake’s fresh produce and culinary offering and support the Buy Local First movement.

When: Saturdays – June 13 – October 17, 2009
Time: 8:00 am to 1:00 pm
Where: Historic Pioneer Park
(300 South & 300 West)

clear-the-air1Residents of Salt Lake and Utah understand the importance of protecting the natural beauty of their surroundings.  This is evidenced by the Clear the Air Challenge issued by Governor Huntsman and Mayors Becker and Corroon that seeks to  improve Utah’s air quality by encouraging people to consider public transit, carpooling, biking, walking, teleworking, and other options to reduce vehicle emissions. continue reading…

freedom-riders-slcBiking season is here and has been for a while. But if you need extra motivation to get in the saddle you might want to swing by Brewviews next Thursday night May 28 and catch Freedom Riders, a new mountain bike film and documentary.

Freedom Riders is about a core group of riders who evolved to creating a precedent setting relationship with the Forest Service and in doing so created the first freeride mountain bike specific trails on public lands in the lower 48.

Freedom Riders goes further to take a look at the evolution of the sport, the progression of trail users, and an inside story of a group of riders that would never see their passion die. continue reading…

Twilight Audience

Summer time approaches rapidly. One of my favorite things about summer in Salt Lake is the Twilight Concert Series, presented by the Salt Lake City Arts Council.

Every year, the SLCAC presents a variety of musical artists on a weekly basis for free. Every Thursday night from July 9 through August 27, you can get your musical fix at the Gallivan Center. The Gallivan Center is the perfect venue for these concerts.

The Arts Council has lined up some great talent once again for 2009. Dates and artists are as follows: continue reading…

The Recycled BikeBicycles in Salt Lake are becoming increasingly popular. With the green lane in its second year and the rising change in weather, I see more pedaling commuters in the downtown district daily. As cycling increases, so does the desire to express individual style. I’m personally more attracted to a vintage bicycle. Yesterday, I was informed of a new, locally-owned bike shop that specializes in just that. Retro riders rejoice, I introduce to you The Recycled Bike, “a bike shop by the people for the people,” as owner Matt May puts it.

Located on the Northeast corner of 9th East and 1st South, continue reading…

uintabrewingLittle known fact:  less than six miles from the SLC airport is one of Utah’s very own breweries, Uinta Brewing, and they give tours. Ever wonder how that delicious Golden Spike you’re drinking came into being?

Call ahead, schedule a time, and find out.

That’s exactly what I did this week, and received a tour from the brewmaster himself, Kevin Ely.  Kevin knows his beer.  He also knows his biochemistry, which makes him both an excellent beer maker and a fascinating tour guide for a science geek like me.   continue reading…

apa_mug_150x80For Salt Lake based Apa Sherpa climbing Everest is about as old hat as climbing Everest could become.

The Nepal native who a few years back moved to Utah and started working at Snowbird so that he could provide a better education for his children, Apa has once again broken his own world record by summiting Mount Everest today for the 19th time.

The Salt Lake Tribune has been tracking Apa’s progress for the past month with a micro-site and a blog that has updates from the mountain about Apa’s progress.  It’s worth going back and re-reading the posts and seeing the things that go into an attempt on Mount Everest.

Check out the Everest Blog at the Salt Lake Tribune.
