retrorose1When I first moved to SLC, Broadway (aka 300 South) confused me.  Where was this downtown Salt Lake street with a name instead of a number?  And why were so many of the places I wanted to go located on it?

Well, I’ve since figured out where it is, and now I’m taking some time to explore, in no particular order, the cool businesses that reside on this downtown street, and learn a little about this part of town.

This weekend, I stopped into Retro Rose, a vintage/collectibles shop run by SLC native Larry Eggett (his siser, Marci, runs the flower shop right next door).

Retro Rose is located in the Worthington Building, the row of yellow shops with black awnings in between 200 and 300 East. continue reading…

sanrafaelswell01With a few unexpected days off on my hands, I decided to get out of the city and beat feet to the San Rafael Swell.

Midweek, I encountered not one other person on the trail, and the drive down (under four hours, front door to campsite) made it an easy trip from SLC.

According to David Day, author of Utah’s Favorite Hiking Trails, the Swell “is a huge elliptical-shaped bubble in the Colorado Plateau that formed some 65 million years ago during a time of great mountain building activity in the American West.” continue reading…

Salt Lake CVB Cycling Team With the exception of Snowbird, all of Utah’s Ski and Snowboard Resorts are closed and skiers everywhere are pulling out the bikes, both road and mountain.  Getting a jump on things just a couple of weeks ago, the “Visit Salt Lake” cycling team, comprised primarily of Salt Lake Convention & Visitors Bureau (SLCVB) employees,  completed its third annual trek to Moab, Utah, for the Skinny Tire Festival.

Held in Utah’s scenic Red Rock region of Southern Utah, the three-day event is a fundraiser for the Lance Armstrong Foundation and its fight against cancer.

The fight against cancer is omnipresent for the SLCVB, having lost its President and CEO, Dianne Nelson Binger, to the disease five years ago this month. “Dianne was an incredible person; her spirit, her elegance and her hard work created a lasting impact on our community,” said Scott Beck, President and CEO of the SLCVB. continue reading…

marathon-logoOne of my favorite Salt Lake events is happening this weekend. Prepare yourself people, it’s the Salt Lake Marathon! In 2008 over 4,000 people participated in the half marathon alone and this year Marathon organizers are expecting a record number of participants.

But if you know anything about me, you know that I’m not a runner. I don’t even run on a treadmill. What I do love about the marathon is volunteering.

Fresco - Winners of the Best Restaurant in SLC - Courtesy of Salt Lake MagazineI’ve got some eating to do! If you’ve not picked up the March-April issue of the Salt Lake Magazine do yourself a favor and find one. Although they announced the winners of the 11th Annual Salt Lake Magazine Dining Awards the magazine goes into more details about the winners.

The overall “Best Restaurant” for SLC went to Fresco, who also took home best Italian. A couple years ago I had a very enjoyable dinner at Fresco and it’s time for a return visit.

Joining the Hall of Fame, and rightly so, were Log Haven and Cucina Tuscana, both icons in the the Salt Lake restaurant scene. continue reading…

wild grape1It was supposed to be a goodbye brunch for a friend, but the only seats available at The Wild Grape, New West Bistro on this Sunday morning were at the bar.

Lesson one:  this place is busy – make a reservation.
Lesson two:  sitting at the bar can be a GOOD thing.

While it made for challenging group conversation, we quickly realized that sitting right in front of the talented Wild Grape kitchen staff has its benefits.  I’d never been before, but apparently, it’s common for folks at the counter to be offered tastes of different dishes.  We got to sample a strawberry and goat cheese dish, as well as tortillas with salsa. continue reading…

Salt Lake City vista - by the Travel Channel UKA while back the UK Travel Channel hopped a British Airway flight and landed in Salt Lake City, staying at the Hilton Salt Lake City Center and the Marriott City Center. Very good choices I might add.

From those two starting points they set out to see what Salt Lake is all about stopping by the Great Salt Lake, Temple Square, Squatters, and Snowbird. Shooting video along the way, they complied some amazing images and pieced it together into a very well done video that is worth the click to check it out.

They outlined five great day trips to hit from the starting point of Salt Lake.  While Arches is pushing it for a day trip, the suggestions were pretty good.  I might have included a summer hike up Timpanogos but I think the list is a good sampler of what can be done from Salt Lake. continue reading…

2009 Ski Salt Lake ShootoutThis year the Ski Salt Lake Shootout which took place in late February was once again a success. Great imagery was captured and a number of top photographers and athletes alike sampled Salt Lake’s Cottonwood Canyons for the first time.

But it didn’t go off comletely without a hitch. For photographer Court Leve, who ended up taking home two first place category awards, it was quite the adventure. Court sent us his tale of how the week went for him here in Utah which is good enough to publish here with his two winning photos (below).

Enjoy the read, it’s quite the adventure. continue reading…

april09-0081With so many different choices of things to do on any given night of the week, do you ever want a regularly scheduled event that you can count on?

How about one that centers around music, held at a cool bar with a great set-up and an outdoor patio? Look no further than Band of Annuals‘ Cowboy Ramble at the Woodshed.

Since returning to SLC this January, I’ve heard the Woodshed’s name come up a number of times, always in a positive light.  I first made my way there for a Salt Lake Green Drinks event a couple months ago, and it was then that I learned about the BOA-sponsored Cowboy Ramble. continue reading…

wickedWicked is playing daily at the Broadway Theater from now until May 3. Shows are sold out, but with the lottery program, there’s still a chance to get in. Try your luck and if you win, you’ll be seeing green while saving greens. Here’s how it works: continue reading…
