Spring Flowers at the LDS Temple

dwarf irisIn response to the lovely weather we had a few weeks ago, spring flowers have begun popping up all over Salt Lake.  Crocuses, dwarf irises, and daffodils are some of the earliest spring flowers, and I’ve seen plenty in the neighborhoods and downtown.  Soon enough we’ll also start seeing my personal favorites: tulips.

The LDS Temple in downtown Salt Lake boasts one of the most awe-inspiring displays of tulips in Salt Lake.  Depending on the year thousands of tulips begin to bloom in Temple Square Gardens from late April to early May. continue reading…

New York Style Pizza in Downtown

Este Pizza in Downtown Salt Lake CityIt seems you can’t land a 747 in any city across the country that doesn’t claim to have a New York style pizza.  Salt Lake is no different.  The thin floppy style hand tossed crust with rich taste and traditional toppings certainly calls to my taste buds.

While I’ve had New York style pizza from a few of the boroughs, I can say that there are a few places I’ve found outside New York that are just as good. One of them that comes close to true NY style recently opened up shop in downtown Salt Lake after having a location in Sugarhouse for a few years.

Complete with New York attitude (No Red Sox attire and a sign on the counter say “we DO NOT serve ranch with our pizza…seriously we don’t“) that is actually quite funny and without ego, Este Pizzeria serves up the traditional New York pizza like it was intended.   Simple, thin crust, traditional toppings…good. continue reading…

San Rafael: Easy-Access Canyoneering

p3270092_adjusted_lresThere’s a slot-canyon paradise just a little over three hours’ drive to the south of Salt Lake City: San Rafael Swell. In any other state, this area would most definitely be a State Park at least, but Utah simply has so many natural wonders that it still hasn’t caught the attention for such a place.

The bright side of that is that it’s still a well-kept secret and it makes for a very cheap and convenient area to visit — no entree fees and you can camp anywhere you want.

I had the chance to visit San Rafael for the first time this weekend past. I had to ask myself what I’ve been thinking of not taking advantage of this area more often. Here’s how we made most of a weekend of canyoneering on a tight schedule: continue reading…

Clubs and Bars - Not So Private Any More

squatters-insideFollowing decades of baffling visitors with its quirky liquor laws, Utah legislators recently passed sweeping changes to the state’s oft-criticized liquor laws, including the elimination the state’s private club system.  This move will simply add to Utah’s ever-growing attributes as a world-class convention and tourism destination.

Surprising to many first-time visitors, Salt Lake has long been home to numerous brew pubs featuring award-winning brewmasters and an eclectic, diverse nightlife scene, but Utah’s unique liquor laws have caused confusion to many considering a Utah meeting, convention or vacation.

The bill to change what has been referred to as archaic legislation will introduce a sense of “normalcy” to Utah’s clubs and bars, making them an attribute now as opposed to a liability to the state’s tourism marketing efforts. Couple that with Salt Lake’s incredible meeting facilities, expansive array of accommodations and dining options, vibrant cultural arts scene and world-class outdoor recreation, and Salt Lake is a formidable destination for any and all groups. continue reading…

SkiTops 2009 Convention

skitops-partySki Salt Lake and its partners just wrapped up hosting 100 of the top-selling tour operators throughout North America during SkiTops’ 2009 annual convention.

The 4-day convention gave this group of influential sellers of ski vacations a birds-eye view of Salt Lake’s version of apres ski, a far cry from the typical scene in most ski towns. Rather than hitting one, maybe two bars at the end of the day, Salt Lake served up hundreds of bars and restaurants for the convention.

Instead of having the choice of either a pizza joint or a high-priced steak place to eat, they found hundreds of restaurants to choose from, running the gamut of price ranges with just about every type of food imaginable. continue reading…

Utah Boat Show at South Towne

It’s snowing outside today but with last weeks’ weather and the 44th annual, 2009 Utah Boat Show last month it was feeling like boating here in Utah was just around the corner. Well, it will be for the faithful who don’t mind donning a dry or wetsuit but it’s still a little bit off.

However, if you went to the boat show put on by Greenband Enterprises, the weather outside had little effect on the attendees and especially those looking to get into the action. Exhibitors and dealers packed the South Towne Expo Center in Salt Lake City, February 4-8. But the boats were only half of the action and there is video to prove it!

Take your skiing to the next level

Are you an expert skiier but want to take your abilities to the next level?  Noting the “void in the area of expert ski instruction”, Alta Ski School instructor Stephen Helfenbein developed Alta’s Performance Ski Camp.

The three- to four-day instructional experiences are aimed at the “skier who… is more of an athlete and dedicated to the sport– not just someone treating the sport as a hobby”.

Skiers who are close but not quite expert shouldn’t be frightened away from attending.   A strong motivation to improve skiing technique and a good base level of fitness are the most important requirements for participation. continue reading…

Thai Garden Restaurant

Outside Thai Garden

I hit a new Thai restaurant today for lunch with my co-workers, Mel and Jaimie. It was a risky move for us because we love Thai food, and we have a couple favorite places already–it was almost like we were cheating on our favorite Thai restaurants.

Nevertheless, this restaurant had been highly recommended by a couple reliable sources. So we took a chance. Long story short, we were all very glad to have taken that chance. Thai Garden Restaurant, located at 4410 S 900 E, was given the winner award by both my co-workers. Yes, they dubbed it their new favorite Thai restaurant. I too, found myself dabbling with the idea to switch my thinking, and in the end, I did.

Three for three! The Thai Garden became a new favorite spot for all three of us. Here are the reasons why: continue reading…

Just One Week Ago

It was just one week ago that I found myself at Brighton Resort with 25″ of new snow. To say it was off the hook is an understatement.

One canyon over at Snowbird where just under 20″ fell the scene was similar to what I experiences at Brighton. It’s amazing to think with today’s temperatures in the mid 60’s in Salt Lake and on mountain temps pushing near 50 at Alta, that we were in the middle of one of the bigger storms this season just one week ago.

Enjoy, compliments of Snowbird.
