Ski Salt Lake Shootout - Day 3

Well the clouds came in but the temps didn’t come down like they typically do here in Salt Lake.  Call it global warming, call it a fluke, bad luck….call a spade a spade.

Regardless of the lack of cooperation, the skiers and photographers for the Ski Salt Lake Shootout were at it on day 3 at Brighton Resort in Big Cottonwood Canyon.  Below, 3 of the participants, including local pro skier Julian Carr, chat about the competition.

Laura Barnes - Marketing Media Manager

Laura Barnes - Salt Lake CVB Media ManagerYou know you’ve landed in a cool spot when in your first week on the job two of those days are spent on the slopes of Salt Lake’s ski resorts.  Such was the introduction to the Salt Lake Convention & Visitors Bureau that Laura Barnes received after joining the ranks.

She is taking on the role of Tourism Communications Manager and will be sharing the message of Salt Lake’s incredible year-round tourism product with local, national and international media.

Laura will also focus on the Bureau’s social media content and be involved in keeping its “My Salt Lake” section of blogs and visitor-generated feedback current and up to date. continue reading…

2009 Ski Salt Lake Shootout

2009 Ski Salt Lake Shootout

After last year’s successful Ski Salt Lake Shootout, the athletes and photographers have once again assembled to the Wasatch Mountains, specifically the resorts of Brighton, Solitude, Alta and Snowbird.

We are now two days into the competition and already there are a couple of video posts, athletes climbing trees, hiking for turns at Snowbird and the crashes.

Hey, a photo shoot isn’t complete without a wipeout, just like a Warren Miller film isn’t complete without a segment of beginners crashing all over themselves and the lifty trying to help them off the lift. continue reading…

Skiing in Salt Lake City has quite a few advantages. Awesome snow, awesome terrain, close proximity to the hill, but one of the coolest features of it is probably how dirt cheap it is to go snowcat skiing here. Powder Mountain offers snowcat skiing rides for $12, which is nothing when compared to the amount operations in Canada and Washington charge.

…okay so maybe the terrain isn’t exactly the same, but still, a ride on a snowcat for $12 is still an awesome deal!

A Typical Weekend at Alta

I was skiing this past week at Alta with a friend in from Chamonix, France and aside from mentioning that my 139 mm waist width Mavens were something he could only ski a couple of times a year, he went on to say that in France they’ll get new snow but rarely if ever like last week at Alta where a couple of feet fell in a couple of days.

I don’t have specific raw data (if you do or know where to find it, enlighten me please) but I would be willing to bet that at least 7 times a season we get a 20″+ storm in the Cottonwood Canyons.

From the looks of it in the video below, one can conclude that France isn’t the only place void of huge dumps that are typical to Alta and the other Cottonwood Canyon Resorts.

Airport Recycling

slc-recycles-150When arriving in Salt Lake Airport a week or so ago, I noticed the numerous recycling bins in the concourse announcing that Salt Lake Recycles.

It got me thinking about airports in general and the amount of things that are likely not recycled but rather tossed to the land fill, particularly from the airplanes themselves.

While I don’t have specific info about the trash that comes off the planes specifically, I know a guy in my neighborhood who works for Delta and started a recycling program at the airport which actually makes money for Delta. That of course is in addition to the impact is has on the environment. continue reading…

Omniture Summit - Are you a Mac or a PC?

omniture-cyber-cafe-mac-dellAs I was leaving the Salt Palace Convention Center last night with the Omniture Summit 09 near conclusion for Day 1, I took notice of the Cyber Cafe that is sponsored by Dell and Mac.

As I was observing the fact that there was a Dell laptop and a Mac desktop at each cyber station, I bumped into my friend Jesse Stay who coincidentally was just logging off a Mac.

He was at the conference with Jeremiah Owyang who is a widely followed blogger who writes about web strategy with a heavy dose of social media. And guess what type of computer Jeremiah was on? A Dell.

So just for the sake of satisfying my curoisity, I did a count of the Omniture Summit attendees and how many were using a Dell and how many were using a Mac.

Dell = 7

Mac = 2

Is Skiing in Salt Lake Affordable?

USA Today - Travel Section Cover - Utah AffordableThe old adage of “you get what you pay for” may not necessarily apply to skiing in Utah where, as the USA Today recently wrote about, you often get more than what you pay for.

The article which ran as a Travel Section cover story last week cited Utah and specifically the Cottonwood Resorts as some of the most affordable places to ski and snowboard.

Speaking of getting more than what you pay for - it snowed 10″ last night and another 10″ is predicted today. Sun is predicted for later in the week.  Snow, sun, snow, sun…repeat.  Just like we like it here in Utah. continue reading…

Ullr Greets Utah Out-of-Towners

It’s no secret that President’s Day Weekend is a busy one for ski resorts (I’ve heard it is the most busy of all the holidays), so I was pleasantly surprised when I found out Ullr brought some extra snow for everyone to play in.
