One Taco Stands aLONE

Lone Star Taqueria

…is one of my favorte spots in Salt Lake Valley to enjoy a Mexican sit down or drive through. Located in Cottonwood Heights, it’s found at a perfect quick-stop spot for adventurers on their way home from the Cottonwood canyons.

Lone Star has received previous praise for its fish tacos and fish burritos. The sauces they use on each menu item is unique and authentic (speaking Spanish helps the ordering process). Ordering chips and salsa is more than just chips and salsa–one has the opportunity to select a preferred salsa from a smorgasbord of salsa recipes.

Big Snow Days in Salt Lake!

Deep powder at Solitude Mountain Resort - December 22, 2008 The lake effect in Salt Lake has been in full effect for the last 48!

Snow reports at each resort show 12 or more inches of new snow at 9 of Utah’s 13 ski resorts! And only one resort reported less than 10 inches.

So, pretty much you can go anywhere in Utah this week and expect some serious fluff. Talk about a Merry Christmas. Here’s a full report of the recent dump in Utah:

Food Matters from City Weekly

I’ve talked about the City Weekly before as one of a number of resources whether you’re a local or visiting for the first time.

Last week City Weekly’s Ted Schefflerr, who writes the Food Matters column, cited three must tastes for Salt Lake. His column featured one of the local favorites Curry in a Hurry and their 10th anniversary, Cristiano Creminelli’s white truffle salami (available at Caputo’s Market), and the new Wild Grape bistro in the avenues. continue reading…

Feeling Powder at Snowbird

Snowbird has been open since early November and although there was a dry spell that had some questioning the viability of staying open through the end of November and first bit of December, I’d be willing to bet those drier days were not even closely on the mind of this skier.

Since the video below was shot, another 2 feet of snow has fallen at Snowbird. With a base depth just shy of 6 feet, the skiing and snowboarding conditions at Salt Lake’s four ski resorts keeps getting better and better.

Sure, there are still rocks and other obstacles that can be seen, I’m not going to lie to you. But my guess is that by the time January 1 rolls around next week the coverage will be similar to mid-season. To watch the video… continue reading…

Did You Say Powder Day?

Winter is in full swing and if you’ve got plans to be here during the Holiday’s you may have timed things perfectly. A fast moving storm blew through Utah today adding over a foot of new snow to nearly all of the Cottonwood Canyon Resorts.

Solitude had 9″ by the time 3pm rolled around with more on the way. The weather service is calling for an additional 4″ overnight.

Behind yesterday’s storm is an even bigger one that is set to arrive Christmas Eve and extend well into Friday. And yet another storm is on track to hit us over the weekend. continue reading…

The Nutcracker at Ballet West

If you’ve not checked out Now Playing Utah and you’re into anything music, dance, theater related, you need to bookmark it now - http://www.nowplayingutah.com.

As I was filtering through things still available this Holiday Season I saw that there are still tickets available and performances through Dec. 27 for Ballet West’s The Nutcracker. The play is performed at the Capital Theater at 50 West 200 South.

Written in 1844 by Alexandre Dumas and with music later created by Tchaikovsky, the story was adapted from the original classic German story written in 1816,The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. The Nutcracker we know today as a holiday tradition wasn’t really adopted as such until the New York City Ballet performed a revised choreographed version in 1954.

Utah’s own Ballet West has added a couple traditions to it’s performances of this classic as well.  But it’s not so much about the performance but more about the participation from the audience. continue reading…

Where will you be skiing this holiday season?

There’s nothing like a holiday break in Utah to get your shred on in style!

Salt Lake - It’s a Grid

I grew up in the suburbs of Portland, Oregon where the direction of roads have no rhyme or reason to them. For a visitor, it was a nightmare.

One street in particular called Boones Ferry Road travels about 15 miles through southwest Portland starting west, then going north, turns east, north again, then west after a little stream crossing then….you get the picture.

Compare that to Salt Lake’s 7th east for example. Active street, touches may parts of the community. It starts heading south and, here’s the punchline, heads south until it ends unceremoniously at the southern end of the Salt Lake Valley. Nothing too exciting. But it’s simple and relatively easy to figure out once you realize a couple of things: continue reading…
