Thai Lotus in Salt Lake CityShawn and I hopped on the town cruiser bikes and took advantage of what could be one of the last few days of warm weather in Salt Lake City. We didn’t have any specific place in mind for lunch so we just rode around downtown, enjoying the sunshine and the autumn leaves.

After a long loop of downtown were were passing by Thai Lotus on 212 East 500 South and after a couple of glances we knew it was time to pull in to check it out. Neither of us had been there before so we went into it with no real expectation. continue reading…

To an avid skier the mountains may look a bit scary right now without snow but soon the blanket of white will arrive and all will be well.  In the meantime there are still many reasons to head up into the mountains to visit Salt Lake’s resorts of Snowbird, Alta, Brighton and Solitude.

One of those is the Scary Aerie Halloween Dinner hosted at the Aerie Restaurant which is on the 10th floor of the Cliff Lodge at Snowbird.

A week from this Friday on Halloween night, the Aerie will be hosting a ghoulishly themed dinner that looks like it could be straight up treat with little trick.

For $39 per person this looks well worth a visit to the mountains. continue reading…

When I was in Spain I got to know a number of Gitanos (Gypsy’s) who were an energetic people, full of life and culture.

Despite this, the Spaniards often called the Gitanos “Mestizo”, meaning that they were a mix of cultures and nationalities rather than “true” Spaniards. For the most part it didn’t ruin their spirits.

In this same open attitude and one of acceptance, Utah artist Ruby Chacon along with her husband, Terry Hurst have opened Mestizo Coffee House, embracing the diversity and yes, the mixing of cultures that exists in the Salt Lake Valley and in particular, the West side.

Salt Lake Magazine had a nice write up about Ruby and Terry’s vision. It’s worth checking out as is Mestizo located at 631 W. North Temple.

Aside from a storm or two, the autumn weather in Salt Lake has been more than enjoyable with average to above average temperatures and of course, the typical abundance of sunshine.  So when a buddy sent me an invite to lunch with “the geeks” at Happy Sumo, I couldn’t pass it up.

Located in the southern end of the Gateway Center, Happy Sumo sits among over a dozen of restaurants and eateries but comes in as the only sushi option. But just because it’s the only option on this end of the Gateway Center, doesn’t mean it doesn’t measure up as it was “Voted Best Sushi” by City Weekly Magazine.

I opted to walk to Sumo from the Salt Palace Convention Center main entrance and it took just over 10 minutes.  The train ride back was not much shorter after waiting for the train to arrive so either option is available if you’re coming from downtown. continue reading…

Firsts.

There are many firsts, but when it comes to snow first tracks and first chair are at the top of the list.

First snowflakes are pretty cool too.  In fact, it snowed last week in Salt Lake for the first time this season which is quite appropriate considering what will unveil this Friday night, October 17 at Bevalo,

Long time Ski Utah Creative Director Chris Pearson will be displaying his photography at Bevalo and kicking it off with a reception this Friday night.

This is the fist time that Chris’ work has been displayed publically, despite having had a number of his images published locally and even some nationally.

Like most backcountry skiers in the Wasatch, Chris too is privy to a tremendous amount of nature’s beauty and moments that can sometimes seem surreal, even unbelievable had they not been experienced first hand.  However, unlike most, he’s got a skill for capturing those moments and bringing them to non skiers and skiers alike. continue reading…

Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker awarded the Salt Lake Convention & Visitors Bureau (SLCVB) an e2 Business Certificate early this summer, the first e2 Business Certificate awarded during Mayor Becker’s term. The e2 certification recognizes the Salt Lake CVB’s commitment to the environment and the community.

Mayor Becker said:

“The Convention and Visitor Bureau’s participation in the e2 program typifies the kind of message we want to send to people considering a visit to our Capital City: Salt Lake City is a place committed to the sustainability of its beautiful mountains and natural, welcoming setting,”

What’s an e2 Busieness?  The Salt Lake Green website gives details about the e2 Citizen and e2 Business programs.  It also has some insightful information including the Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan for Salt Lake, part of which includes the now green lanes on 200 South. continue reading…

Winter has returned to OOOTAH! Sure they weren’t the greatest turns, but they were the first of many!

It’s time to welcome the powder back to Utah…

Attics, closets, garages, basements…most of us have at least one and chances are they are full of stuff.  Oddly enough, exploring someone elses can be remarkably interesting.

I remember my grandma had a “bunker” for lack of better terms as a part of her basement where old books, nick-knacks and random items she and grandpa couldn’t part with ended up.  I spent hours feeding my curiosity and inquisitiveness checking out the ordinary and interesting items in the bunker.

What then if you’re a museum who has more than 1 Million collected items and you only have space to show 1/% of them in the exhibit halls?  Where do you store all that stuff ?   In a VERY large basement!

To cater to the curriosity of many (or perhaps the few) the Utah Museum of Natural History located at 1390 E Presidents Circle on the UofU campus is hosting their once a year “What’s in the Basement” tomorrow, October 11, 2008 from 9:30am-5pm.

It includes hands-on activities for kids.

One of the values associated with purchasing the Connect Pass is that it includes a meal at the Lion House Pantry, located in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City on the corner of South Temple and State Street. (63 East South Temple to be precise)

What you get is the “Pioneer Meal” with a value of $9.95.  I recently ate at the Lion House using the Connect Pass and with the addition of a Lion House Root Beer the total was $10.50, so I ended up paying $.55 in addition to showing my Connect Pass.

Not too shabby at all.  But how was the meal? continue reading…

Utah and specifically Salt Lake is widely known as the religious center for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, commonly known as the Mormon church.  In the heart of downtown is Temple Square where thousands of visitors each year make their way.

Perhaps lesser known and visited yet impressive in its own scale is the Cathedral of the Madeleine located at 331 E. South Temple.

As a Utah and Nationally listed historical location if you’ve found yourself in Salt Lake and are looking to see unique architecture the Cathedral makes for a memorable visit, especially if there is a concert as there commonly can be. continue reading…
