  FAMILY HISTORY LIBRARY PATRON DESKTOP
event photo

Many visitors to the Family History Library are interested in learning more about the Family History Library Patron Desktop, which is on all of our computers. We asked Gary Pack, an Information Specialist who helps manage the Library Desktop, to share briefly some of the reasons why it is such a valuable resource for our patrons. Here is his response:

* We now have over 2700 databases available in our "Databases at the Family History Library" link on the Desktop.

* While in the Library, you can get direct access to any of the 2700+ Databases with a link from the Family History Library Catalog.

* We have over 20 subscription websites that we pay for so you don't have to. These sites which can be used for free at the Library include: Accessible Archives, Ancestry.com, FindMyPast.com, Footnote.com, Godfrey Memorial Library, Heritage Quest Online, JSTOR, NewEnglandAncestors.org, One Great Family and World Vital Records. Come see many others, too!

* We now have COMPLETE access to all of Ancestry.com resources here in the Library. This has put smiles on the faces of many of our guests.

* You can access the Internet, our subscription websites, and print to our printers via our wireless network.

The Patron Desktop is constantly changing and improving. Come visit us to see what we have added this week!.

Gary Pack works at the Family History Library as a member of the Information Services team. He is the lucky guy who gets to program and maintain the software on the Patron Desktop at the Library. After getting his Computer Science degree at Utah State University, he has worked in software engineering for over 20 years. He was brought to the Family History Library almost two years ago to help the Library with their technical needs as they move forward into the future. Gary has been on the board of the John Pack Family Association for several years and enjoys finding out more stories about his ancestors. When he is not at the Library, Gary loves all things outdoors and volunteers as a scout leader and trainer. He also loves to play and teach the viola. Gary and his family live in Layton, Utah.
