marathon-logoOne of my favorite Salt Lake events is happening this weekend. Prepare yourself people, it's the Salt Lake Marathon! In 2008 over 4,000 people participated in the half marathon alone and this year Marathon organizers are expecting a record number of participants. But if you know anything about me, you know that I'm not a runner. I don't even run on a treadmill. What I do love about the marathon is volunteering.Utah is the Beehive State, but we should be known as the Volunteer State if that nickname hadn't already been taken. Utah has the highest number of volunteers. What can I say, we like to help people in Utah. And I like to help runners.Last year I was part of the Finish Line Zone 2 team. What does that mean? For 6 hours I clipped timing chips from runners shoes. There's no better place than the finish line to watch the winner take his final strides.Salt Lake Marathon finish lineHundreds of people volunteer each year, doing everything from setting up the barricades, to distributing packets, to handing out medals.  We do it from the goodness of our hearts and for a marathon T-Shirt.I'm at the finish line again this year.  If you're running look for me there.  I'll be the one with a huge smile and some clippers asking for your timing chips. If you're interested in volunteering, or if you just want to check out the route the runners will be taking check out the Salt Lake Marathon website.Image courtesy of Theorris.
