THE SALT LAKE SCENE >
SLC Library: Vacation for your Inner ChildTony - September 14, 2009 at 2:36PM
The Salt Lake City Main public library is an amazing architectural masterpiece. It is very hard to pass by it without noticing its curved architectural lines with a certain harmony of concrete and spandrel glass. But, the very best part of of the SLC Main is the world that has been created for children inside the library. If you have never visited the children’s section of the library, you have missed out on giraffes, trolls, dragonflies, ice caves, waterfalls, and even a quiet old attic where you can pull up your favorite book and read for a while. Every time I take my kids there I scratch my head that there is no admission cost to this place. The library has so many features and attractions that it feels a lot like spending a day at an amusement park designed around books. The first big attraction is the sight you will see when you enter the library through either the front or the back main doors. Their are three glass elevators that take you up to the top. Don’t miss out on a chance to ride the glass elevators up and down several times. ;-)The next must see is the view of downtown SLC from the roof. You can access the roof from the fifth floor or from the giant staircase that winds up the spine of the library. You can explore the millions of books, dvds, cds and more, but I recommend going straight for the basement and checking out the children’s section of the library. The children’s section of the library has some thematic reading rooms. One of them resembles an ice cave similar to the place superman used to run away to for his “quiet time”. My favorite room is the one constructed to feel like the an old attic. There is also a nice outdoor reading area with a table and chairs that features a waterfall and some sculptures.Quite honestly I had visited the library at least 5 times before I felt like I had “seen” the library. If you visit, plan on spending a couple hours, so you won’t feel too rushed. If you get hungry while you are there, check out the shops at Library Square. I always find myself standing halfway between the Hemingway Cafe and the SLC Roasting Co. not know which craving to give into.SLC Main Library | 210 East 400 South, Salt Lake City UT 84111 | (801) 524-8200 | Hours: Mon.-Thurs. 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Fri.-Sat. 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday 1-5 p.m.
