World Beer Cup Gold for Squatters and Wasatch Beers

Published: 04/13/2010
Local Salt Lake breweries, Wasatch and Squatters, received gold medals at the 2010 World Beer Cup this past weekend in Chicago. Wasatch's drink-ably smooth Polygamy Porter medaled in the Session Beer Category, one of the fastest growing categories at the competition with 28 entries. Squatters Black Forest Schwarzbier medaled in the German-Style Schwarzbier Category against an imposing 38 entries.

"The competition has grown significantly since the first World Beer Cup in 1996, where there were 250 breweries competing for 61 gold medals. This year 642 breweries competed for 90," explains Greg Schirf founder of Wasatch Beers. "The average number of entries per category has increased to 37; back then it was under 10; being recognized by the industries best is awe-inspiring, it's what our brewers work towards every day."

Polygamy Porter is a dark, 4% alcohol by volume, medium bodied ale with inviting chocolate and malty flavors that fade into a slightly dry, silky smooth finish. This is Polygamy Porters second World Beer Cup medal and Wasatch Beers fifth. Why have just one?

Brewmaster Jenny Talley has been brewing Squatters beers for nineteen years and entering their beers at World Beer Cup since 1998. This is Squatters ninth medal from the prestigious event and Black Forest Schwarzbiers' second. This tasty German lager has smooth roasted undertones and is lightly hopped. "If you want a great Schwarzbier you don't have to go to Bavaria," explains Jenny Talley "I brew it twice a year; it will be back on tap late September prior to the Great American Beer Festival."

Brewers from six continents earned awards from an elite international panel of judges this week in the 2010 Brewers Association World Beer Cup-the world's largest-ever commercial beer competition. The eighth bi-annual competition announced awards to brewers from 19 countries ranging from Australia and Italy to Iceland and Japan.

This year, 642 breweries from 44 countries and 47 U.S. states vied for awards with 3,330 beers entered in 90 beer style categories. For more information on the World Beer Cup and the Brewers Association or to view a complete list of winners visit
