50+ vendors featuring produce and local food featured every other Saturday through April
Salt Lake City (November 7, 2013) – In a collaborative effort between city and state leaders and the Downtown Alliance, a winter farmers market will return to downtown Salt Lake on November 9th at the Rio Grande Depot with more than 50 local vendors (listed below). Local produce will be available from 16 area farms, as well as a wide array of other local products, including meat, honey, jam, salsa and more. This diverse range of products includes three bakeries, four cheese companies and four local natural meat vendors featuring beef, lamb, pork and eggs.
“I think it will really surprise people just how much fresh produce is available at this time of year, making it easy to eat seasonally, which makes  sense to our wallets and our bodies,” said Alison Einerson, Winter Market Manager. “Potatoes, onions, carrots…all the really great root vegetables that make up our holiday tables, for example. Apples and pumpkins for pie, sweet potatoes, and much more.”
Many of the products available are unique to the Winter Market, such as New York-style bagels from The Bagel Project, fresh roasted Anaheim peppers from Firebird Chiles, as well as products from small purveyors including Wilson’s Wicked Mustards, Wasatch Organics juices, Biocentric Bros. mushrooms, and Terrapin Station barbeque sauces.
The Winter Market at Rio Grande comes on the heels of the highly successful “pop-up” market series, sponsored by the Downtown Alliance last winter.  The Winter Market is also a pre-cursor to a daily year-round public market, which is slated to be constructed in the Rio Grande neighborhood in the years to come. The long range plan aims to redevelop and revitalize the Rio Grande neighborhood and strengthen Utah’s economy to help support Utah ranchers, famers and other small businesses by leveraging the success of the 21 year-old Downtown Farmers Market.
Hosting a Winter Market at the Rio Grande Depot also offers an opportunity to provide additional exposure for the programs and resources found at the Rio Grande Depot, which are overseen by the Utah Department of Heritage and Arts. These include the Rio Gallery and The Utah Division of State History.
The Market should inject new energy into the Rio Grande neighborhood through increased foot traffic and positive use, benefitting small businesses such as the Rio Grande Café and the others in the area.
The Rio Gallery will be open on Saturday, and is currently showcasing "Utah 2013: Mixed Media & Works on Paper" which highlights both emerging and established Utah artists creating the best work in Utah. This competition and exhibition has been a Utah tradition since 1899. The exhibit includes 84 works by 57 artists across the state of Utah. There will be printed catalogs of the exhibition including statements from this year's jurors: Simon Zalkind from Denver, CO and Lisa Tarmiris Becker from Albuquerque, NM. Catalogs are available at no cost.
In addition, the Utah Division of State History’s Research Center will be open from 10 AM to 2 PM this Saturday.  The Research Center located in the historic Rio Grande Train Station provides public access to the research collections of the Utah Division of State History. The collections include over a million historic photographs, 35,000 books, and 7,000 manuscripts. A small exhibit highlighting State History’s effort to inventory its artifact collection will open November 9th. Artifacts from the collection will be on display.
