Salt Lake airport a great place to get stuck

Published: 11/18/2009
A traveler could do a lot worse than get stranded at Salt Lake City's aging airport, according to SeatGuru.com, which bills itself as the Web's most complete resource for airline information.

On Tuesday, SeatGuru released its pick of Salt Lake City International Airport and four other domestic airports as the best places to be stuck during the heavy holiday travel season, which starts next week.

About half of the 21 million people who used the airport last year were connecting passengers. So what can a hapless victim of a lengthy flight delay expect of Utah's biggest airport?

Free Wi-Fi in all terminals and concourses, for one thing. SeatGuru also points to views of the Wasatch Mountains as a diversion; 31 restaurants, including a Krispy Kreme doughnut outlet and a Salt Lake Brewing Co. pub; and awards for pollution prevention, recycling and the best on-time record for departures.

There was no mention of trips to the Salt Lake Temple.

Airport spokeswoman Barbara Gann said Tuesday she had never heard of SeatGuru. Nevertheless, she was tickled by the accolade.

The other four airports are:

» San Francisco International Airport. Highlights include the famous Boudin's Bakery; upscale shopping at Burberry, Coach and Gucci; spa services and showers.

» Portland International Airport. Conde Nast has named Portland the nation's best airport for three years in a row. Terminals and concourses are powered by solar panels. The Nike shoe store makes 75 percent of its electricity from the sun. No sales tax at stores and restaurants.

»McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas. Slot machines, an aviation museum, the Jose Cuervo Tequileria, oxygen bar and massage locations are some of the amenities. The Las Vegas strip is just five miles away.

» Miami International Airport. Travelers can get manicures, pedicures and spray-on tans at a spa; rent mobile phones and get a haircut. Restaurants offer Cuban, Japanese and Caribbean cuisine.
