New TRAX Airport Line to Open Sunday

Published: 04/11/2013

Devin Felix,

Call back your brother and tell him you don’t need a ride to the airport after all. Beginning next week, you can take TRAX instead. The 6-mile TRAX Green Line extension to Salt Lake International Airport, a project four years in the works, will begin operating at 10 a.m. Sunday.

UTA spokesman Chad Saley said the line is expected to cater to many people who don’t usually ride other TRAX lines because it will save them from having to find rides to the airport. UTA expects about 4,500 riders per day.

“I think this is the line that more people have been excited about than anything else in transit,” Saley said.

The airport line is an extension of the TRAX Green Line, which runs from West Valley City and into downtown Salt Lake City. There are six stops on the route, including a stop on the bridge at 500 W. North Temple, where riders can transfer to or from the FrontRunner train below. Also along the way are stops near the Utah State Fairpark, the Jordan River Trail and businesses. The line ends at a station just a few feet south of Terminal One at the airport.

The line will operate from 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. weekdays, 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sundays. Trains will run every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 20 minutes on weekends. Saley said UTA’s budget prevents it from running during extremely early or late hours to accommodate riders traveling on extremely early or late flights.
