Bishop Burton Honored for Tourism Efforts

Published: 07/05/2012
UtahBusiness.com, by Di Lewis -- David Burton received Visit Salt Lake’s Tourism Achievement Award for his involvement in the creation of City Creek.

The annual award honors residents and community organizations for outstanding efforts in supporting tourism in Salt Lake County and the mission of Visit Salt Lake. Burton is the former Presiding Bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Along with the rest of the Presiding Bishopric, Burton directed the LDS Church’s privately funded downtown redevelopment project, City Creek.

“His (Burton’s) ability to bring so many diverse parties and interests to the table successfully, culminating in what is arguably the state’s newest crown jewel benefiting locals and visitors alike, is something everyone can recognize and celebrate,” said Carlene Walker, board chair of Visit Salt Lake, in a press release.

The Visit Salt Lake Board of Trustees said 2012 was the best time to honor Burton because of City Creek’s completion, however, his 17 years of service contributed to their decision to give him the award. During his time as Presiding Bishop, Burton was involved in the church’s welfare and humanitarian programs, as well as real estate, construction and facilities management.

"Bishop Burton's many contributions to the growth and development of Salt Lake City will be enjoyed by residents and visitors for years to come," said William S. Taubman, COO of Taubman Centers, owner of City Creek Center.

Burton was given the award at Visit Salt Lake’s Second Quarter Board of Trustees Meeting on June 28.
