blue haiku Blooms Again—with Monika Jalili
An Excellence in the Community Concert at Gallivan Hall
December 4, 2014, 7:30pm
You could almost call it a reunion—except that blue haiku never really broke up. They simply added two illustrious members, Kate MacLeod and Hal Cannon, and became Red Rock Rondo. As Red Rock Rondo they perform themed song cycles, released two CDs, and taped an Emmy-winning TV special (produced by Western Folklife Center and KUED-TV).
But now, after a five-year hiatus, blue haiku brightly blooms again, joined by the exquisite singer, Monika Jalili.
The new blue haiku with Monika Jalili will debut December 4, 2014, 7:30pm, at Gallivan Hall, in a free concert presented by Excellence in the Community (excellenceconcerts.org, 801-718-3862). Gallivan Hall is in the Gallivan Center, 239 S. Main Street, Salt Lake City.
Phillip Bimstein, Charlotte Bell, Harold Carr and Flavia Cervino-Wood formed blue haiku in 2001. With the 2002 release of their CD, heat beneath the sand, their chamber folk songs received airplay on folk radio programs all across the country and internationally. The upcoming concert will feature some of those earlier songs, but it will also showcase many brand new ones—including songs written specifically for the entrancing voice of Monika Jalili.
Phillip and Charlotte first heard Monika at an Excellence in the Community concert in 2013 and delighted in her beautiful performance of Persian folk and love songs. Monika Jalili is a classically trained singer who moved to Utah after a career in musical theatre on the East Coast. Phillip asked if he could write songs for her and was thrilled when she said yes. The December 4 Gallivan concert will be the first time they perform these songs.
blue haiku features oboe, English horn, violin, guitar, bass and vocals:
Harold Carr is an in-demand eclectic bass player who has performed and recorded with Bobby McFerrin, Crystal Gayle, Lightnin' Hopkins, John McCuen, Steve Lacy, Catie Curtis and the Mark Chaney Trio.
Flavia Cervino-Wood (violin) has performed and recorded with Milton Nascimento, Sol y Luna, Cecil Taylor, the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and the Salt Lake Symphony.
Charlotte Bell (oboe/English horn) has performed and/or recorded with Anke Summerhill, Kate MacLeod, Scherzando Winds, John Flanders and the Salt Lake Symphony.
Phillip Bimstein’s new wave band, Phil ‘n’ the Blanks, had several videos on MTV in the 80s. He also composes classical music that has been performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center and London’s Royal Opera House. In addition to his steel string guitar, for this concert Phillip will also pack 12-string and classical guitars, a walkabout dulcimer, piano and a yard sale-acquired singing banjo that wrote its own song based on the experience!
