The Utah Museum of Natural History: The Natural Wonders of Utah

Published: 05/14/2009

 - A Visit Salt Lake Connect Pass Attraction -

Salt Lake City (May 2009)-The Utah Museum of Natural History (UMNH), located on the campus of the University of Utah, is the largest natural history museum in the state. The Visit Salt Lake Connect Pass includes admission to UMNH, allowing visitors to enjoy the natural wonders, beauty and history of Utah without leaving Salt Lake City. The UMNH is one of more than a dozen attractions offered on the Visit Salt Lake Connect Pass.

The museum's exhibits cover a broad range of time periods, including the Dinosaur Hall, which displays a number of complete dinosaur skeletons and other prehistoric artifacts from around the state. A large display of artifacts from Eastern Utah's Range Creek, one of the nation's richest archaeological resources, sheds light on the Fremont tribes that inhabited the land between approximately A.D. 500 and A.D. 1350. Utah's five distinct American Indian tribes also have their own exhibit areas within the museum, all of which were extremely popular during the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.

"Toadally Frogs" is the museum's newest exhibit and allows visitors view over 20 species of live frogs from around the world plus "ribbiting" programs, including "Hipper & Hopper: Two Toadally Awesome Frogs."  Presented by the Audubon Nature Institute, "Toadally Frogs!" runs through September 14, 2009, and is the final special exhibit in the Dumke Gallery location.

The Utah Museum of Natural History recently broke ground on a new, larger facility and is moving in the winter of 2011. The 161,000 square-foot facility, adjacent to Red Butte Garden, will double the museum's current display space and feature many new exhibits.

Guided tours are available, and metered parking is available along the University's President's Circle and on city streets near the museum. A gift shop is also provided for visitors to buy souvenirs. The museum is open 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. For more information, visit www.umnh.utah.edu or call 801-581-6927.
